Ok guys, I’ve been looking for a good lightweight frame pack for a moose trip this fall and can’t seem to find anything around here that will work or won’t break the bank. Any suggestions?
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Alps Outdoorz makes one that will do you just fine. You can buy the most expensive one out there and at the end of the day they both get the job done. I have older ones not even sure on the names but do the job every year and work right along side with the high prices/brand name frames. IMO Now I'm talking JUST frame no backpack type just board/ledge and strapping/tie downs and alum frame. Like this or a type like this will do you fine. https://www.google.com/search?q=pac...093&bih=470#spd=11342362785568988722

I'm a firm believer that Packs and Boots should be bought with comfort in mind and not price. I understand not wanting to spend the big dollars but I'll tell you my experience with trying to go inexpensive. I shot a Bull elk 4 miles back, I had bought a cheaper pack (don't remember the brand, but Sportsman's Warehouse sells them around here) It was a down hill walk with a load and uphill empty. On the first trip out I put backstraps, tenderloins, sheath meat and 1 front shoulder in the pack. At the end of 4 miles on the first trip, I couldn't lift my right leg any higher than a couple inches. I had to visit a chiropractor 5 times to get my hip back into place, I originally thought that I had the pack set up incorrectly (If you've never set one up, get with some one who really knows, there is a right way and a wrong way) so I reset it up and tried again next year on a cow elk 2 miles back and had the same problem. I got fed up and bought a Eberlestock F1 Mainframe Pack (around $200) and packed my Bull elk out last year, 8 miles in 4 trips by myself uphill loaded and I felt exhausted but great, no pain.
It's a trappers life for me

get on some hunting forums that have a classifieds section and look for Kifaru, or Mystery Ranch. you can get some really good packs for a lot cheaper than new. Trust me when I say you need a good quality pack to pack out an animal, especially a moose. You WILL regret buying a cheap pack!

What type of hunt ? And where? Outdoorsmen makes a great pack. Spend the money get best you can. I use a badlands ox for the second trip on elk, but alway bring out a hind or front and trim first load in my day pack. On our cow hunt last year 5 of us packed 2 cows in one trip in 1 outdoorsmen 2 badlands 2200 1 Coleman peak and the wifes pack cant remember the brand but almost a school backpack the way its built. Beat a second trip 1 1/2 uphill but wasn't fun. At the pickup point

Cheap packs suck. The military packs are made well and made too last but are heavy. I have an older Arcteryx Bora 95 that I might want gone, contact me if your interested it is a 95 liter capacity.

Double Bull is the best! If you read about the quality you will be impressed. If you try one you will be impressed by the capabilities and comfort.

I too have been wanting to upgrade and replace my 35 yr old Camp Trails frame pack to a new external frame/pack combo that will also accommodate my rifle. Starting off with 7-8 lbs with an empty pack is tough to swallow. The pic I posted above is a Camp Trails pack and probably just about the same era as yours. With the bag on it, I doubt it weighs more than a couple pounds. I've bought the newer stuff like the Badlands but found myself going back to the old freighter frame packs. They're durable and get the job done. I've never lugged a heavy load with any pack any distance and not experienced some discomfort, it's just part of the deal.

You absolutely cannot buy a better pack than a Mystery Ranch pack. They’re pricy; but, they’ll last forever. I know they are a little heavier. That’s because of the materials used to make a bombproof pack that will distribute a load better than anything else on the market making toting around moose quarters not quite as miserable.
Your boots and your pack will be the most important money you spend for a hunt like this. Save for the Mystery Ranch bag and you will not be upset.

How much do you guys pack out at once? Im curious. Some people say 150lbs? Thats four 40lbs bags of salt. I live 2.5 miles from town and can't imagine carrying 4 bags of salt into town just walking down the road. Then a moose or a elk or something would be like what, three more trips? Geezy Peets!!! 45 to 60 lbs. and make a few trips. The high elevations and steep/shale rocky terrain isn't worth the fall or slip etc.. Horses is the way to go but I don't have one that is pack trained now.
