Back pack you might want to check on the use of side by sides there, a guy walking here can count the SXS going by him in the morning if they can drive that area.

Congrats on the tag. Not sure what your budget is but have read a lot of good things about Montana hunt company. They're not cheap but do well for their hunters and maybe booked for this year. Bowsite, roc slide and monstermuleys are good hunting forums to maybe gather a little general info. Also bowsite has an outfitter review that can be helpful.

I would DIY if you feel comfortable doing the hunt. As far as outfitters there are many but you will need to research them and call and visit with them.

Just had a hope someone on here would say their hunters didn't get tags and they have a mid-late September spot they are trying to fill...

Some years ago my son did a DIY no vehicles allowed Elk hunt in CA. It was all fun until he killed an elk. Lucky for him two guys with horses came by and packed it out. Ya know Butch- these days ya just get ya some rental llamas and your good to go...(it's a thing) Or I could just call my buddy Cam- he packs elk out one over each shoulder! #Highcountry But more realistically/ seriously I'd rather speak to a fellow trapper- someone that knows an area like only a trapper and hey if that trapper accepts $ to point hunters in the right direction- all the better!

I was a licensed guide in Montana. Elk range outfitters, and beyond Yellowstone , also black otter. Been many moons ago. I'm sure Bill Montanya sold out and I tried a search for Tim And Tom Wilks beyond Yellowstone no listings. I used to archery hunt the forest service above the town of Basin Mt., Confederate gulch on the back side of Canyon Ferry reservoir between Helena and Townsend is good as well. West of Helena off hyw 12 go south towards Rimini. Mt. is a BIG place with a lot of USFS ground. A copy of Bugle from RMEF will have a catalog of outfits that have donated hunts to RMEF for fund raising. Do your due diligence and talk to previous clients good and bad cause there a lot of shady outfits . Just remembered , Wilderness Connection out of Cinnabar Basin Gary Duffy ran a good outfit. Sorry can't give you more current info. Like I said been many moons. Good luck and good hunting.

cmcf... When I was a pistol kid Bill Montanya and an older fella everyone called "pecker" stayed in a cabin in my folks yard and trapped coyotes and beaver. I suppose that was around 1976. Small world. OP Where in MT are you thinking of hunting?
I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.
