Some unusual items this year. Tax loss carried forward. Capital gain on sale of land. Capital gain on stocks. Prepared estimated taxes for this year. Would have been $ 380 but I get a $ 100 discount for being a client of the firm for over 30 years. Paid $ 280.

This year I ended up going with TurboTax $159.99.

Usually I used the TaxAct online with good results. I tried it earlier this month. What a pain.

Got me off doing a small business and all. I couldn't correct it.

I buy Turbo Tax premier for about 99 dollars. I can do all the forms and the two businesses and I do my own taxes.

One benefit of being married to a CPA, taxes done and returns are back. Her goal every year is to get back under $100 from each from State or Federal. She is always amazed at how people get excited about huge refunds.

I utilize TaxAct and do my own. I figure I can answer all the questions just as well as paying someone else to answer them for me. I have work, farm, 1099's, govt payments for conservation programs, wife self employed and generate quite a few forms. A CPA does the job to make money - why would they care if you owe or not? Doing your own taxes is not really very hard if you can read and click NEXT. After you get it down the first year, you will learn what to save and how to better organize before you start answering the questions.

I should add - every one who is a slave to a job and goes to work, has taxes withheld and then files needs to have some sort of secondary job to expense. You will build more net worth by doing anything for yourself in addition to working all your life for someone else.
