New to trapping located in Idaho and really got an itch to trap badger since I see nothing but badger mounds on my way to work everyday. I know the pelts aren’t worth much but not chasing them for money. I’ve got a private property about 50 acres that I’ve been given permission to trap on. Owner says it’s riddled with badgers and coyotes. Anyways looking to find a good bait to put out? I understand that badgers with go for a similar set as coyotes? I’ve been scouring the forum for any information and it seems most others go for something else and end up with badgers I their traps randomly. Sorry for being long winded just really excited to finally start a new hobby.

Loll that old trapper will set you down a path.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Badgers love holes and skunk, but they make tons of holes a night, so you probably won't catch one in the first few days.

You can get the badgers in your coyote sets. Also if it is with the law in your state set 220 in front of a active hole. You can set a foothold outside the hole and set it like trapping coyote. They will make a good size catch circle and dig a good size hole also.

X2. Remember and stake it good. Most badgers will dig dirt inwards as they fight the trap. As the center is raised they gain leverage on the stake because they are so much higher then it. A few will push dirt out from the center that’s usually no problem

What`s your weather like,if it`s really cold and you still have snow they may still be sleeping. When trapping for coyotes I catch them in my sets baited with Apple road bait and lured with Gusto.Either one will work.

There is nothing to be added on badgers, except their psychology is they are not stupid animals, just arrogant like Grizzly bears. They are not trap shy, because they intimidate everything else, and will easily work a set because they have that attitude. Set up for them as you would red fox in trap placement and use anything that you would for canines as they have very good noses and will work a set. They are easy to hold, but stay away from long chains. As you have yotes, use an offset yote trap.
I would rather you were working the coyotes over as they are the problem for wildlife. Badgers are work to skin and flesh. They also are one of the easiest things to trap so there is zero challenge in it. Lastly, just because you have holes means zero, because holes mean they have already worked the area in killing all the gophers and prairie dogs, which is what these soil churners do as rodent killers.

I’ve actually thought that I’d have better success going for coyotes and if I get a badger then success both ways. All though there are plenty of holes the area is over run by ground squirrels we call whistle pigs. So there’s plenty of life. Weather wise we’re in the 60’s already and setting the spring rains.

When use footholds make sure you cross stake your traps .I normal add 3' of chain to me .I have not had a badger dig my trap that way that was set for coyote.I also got them in snares set for coyotes under fence crawl under. The badgers make a mess that way also.
