anyone ever used one of these? Ive used some of the cheaper $100 push planters sold at the local coop and they seem pretty inconsistent in planting. Tried to plant peas with one of the cheap ones and it just pooped out seeds nearly touching each other. We decided to buy a hoss planter this year because it seems more like a quality piece that hopefully works properly. The price is nothing compared to the back pain of trying to sow seeds by hand for me.

Yeah ive used a couple of the cheaper ones i borrowed and they work ok but i usually end up cussing at them at some point for some reason. I dont really have enough land to justify a tractor and planter (nor the funds) I have a rear tine tiller i break up the garden with. This seemed like a good investment. Its been taking the whole family about 5-6 hours to hand seed the garden and i can get the same amount of work done in about 30 minutes with a push planter. Im hoping it works like its advertised.

I use the hoss seeder. I like it better than the earthway. The hoss is better for large seeds like beans, squash and corn. Not so much small seeds like any brassica, beets, carrots, etc. The seed plate selection also is limited, I've had to make a few for the large seeded butterbean or to adjust spacing without taping off holes.
The problem with the small seeds is the brushes. The brushes tend to clog up with the small seeds and the plates for small seed have to be cups to prevent seed getting under the plate the holes tend to bridge and clog as well.
The earthway actually does better with singulating small seed but lacks the weight/mass to cut a proper furrow.
In use the hoss is far superior to the earthway. Mine is the older model that bolts up to the wheel hoe. I have and use two wheels hoes. If you get the wheel hoe go on fleabay and get original planet jr implements. They are better steel than what hoss uses.
I really like the looks of the Jang seeder for my next seeder.

Only thing i plant with small seeds is turnips and rutabagas, those are easy enough to sow by hand. My main thing is corn and peas so this planter should be fine then. Maybe next year i will invest in the 2 wheel hoe. Little bit at a time i might have everything i need by the time im dead.

The hoss planter is the best push type planter made. We have had them all and this planter is the way to go you can buy blank seed plates from then and drill to the seed size you are planting if the included plates do not fit the seed sizes you need. Worth its weight in gold and a real back saver.
