We snare beaver the same here and set traps like that for black fish. Haven't found a place now in a couple years where the black fish are keeping open. How did you come across your spot?

I broke through on my snowmachine and also saw where a moose went through. so I set it up for otter, and eventually saw where the otter were coming out and eating blackfish, ie. blood on the ice. I threw in my blackfish trap, and did pretty good. The last few years it froze solid to the mud, from lack of snow and could not set it. Its a good spot this year, should get more later in the spring.
Look for a small channel between two lakes, That's generally a good spot. Also check anywhere the otter are popping out.
When mink and otter were good money, the trappers here used these traps for fur, and did real good. I still get muskrats in mine set for blackfish.
They really do look like miniature burbot and taste like them too. They can freeze pretty much solid and come back to life after being thawed if its just a for a few hours. Pretty cool fish. They are very important diet here for mink ,and otter and even fox paw them out of the ice and eat.
I heard the diet here of the Natives was like 60% blackfish back in the old days, during the winter. Not a lot to eat then.
