I am ready to replace my DP's I've been using since 2007. They have caught alot of coons. I have never tried many of the brands. If you were buying all new this year, which DP and why? I am looking for suggestions from guys that catch 100 coon or more a year in DP's. Not interested in egg, coon cuffs etc. Thank you.

Well what were you using before? And did they work for you?

I have been using the Z-traps and honestly really like them for 2 reasons, the first one is that fact they are push/pull triggers and the second is they were around 1.5 lbs of trigger force one of the lights I've seen!

Beav, I am using Lil Grizz, the last model before Keith bought them out. They work very well for me, still good traps. I am wanting to pass these down to the grandsons and re-outfit my traps. I'm not familiar with any others and wonder if something else merits a look. Kind of like when I was in high school I dated several Methodists girls and thought they were the way to go. That was until I got a little Baptist girl in the pickup with me.

NO-BS dogproofs are great. They are kind of like a modified Duke.
The NO-BS dogproofs are a pull only style and come with a rubber thing on the trigger, to give the coons something to feel and want to grab. They have a strengthened dog, good black coating, good chain with crunch proof swivels and come with chained Wolffangs installed. And....they are under $100.00 per dozen. [Linked Image]

I've used Dukes in the past and like them but I am really liking the Coon Daggers so far.

Keith bought my original old stock Lil' Grizz Traps and Grizz Grenade DP Traps. I made a special signature series "Sterling Grizz" for Sterling Fur.

I still have inventory for the V2 Grizz Traps and Sterling Grizz's and will be at the NTA Convention to sell the remaining inventory at a pretty good discount to make room for my new business venture.

This is what all of my DPs from now on will be. Ran them this season and loved them.

Before buying a bunch of the NoBS dogproofs, I recommend buying a couple and check the spring strength. I recently held a couple of new ones and was very surprised at how weak they were. Seriously, they were brand new and were softer than what I recall my 7-8 year old Zs, Griz and Duke strength is. It could have been a bad batch of traps. It happens. But if I were you, I’d go to a dealer, compress some springs and see who has the spring strength you want.

The springs on the newer Dukes and really strong. I noticed of few of the dogs were slightly bent/curved after being set all season.

Never had a single coon get out of the No BS traps I am using. They are hard enough for me to compress that I don’t think I’d want them any stronger.

I’ve had the opportunity to look at coon from around the country and in some parts of the country, they’re substantially smaller than others. Two years ago, my local buyer said they didn’t think they bought one coon that was less than extra large when scraped and dried. I know 3/4 of my coon stretch 2X or bigger. Our average here is over 14 pounds and a 27-30 pound coon isn’t out of the ordinary at all. Maybe the NoBS trap works well for New Jersey or Alabama coon, and if it does, go for it. But I want a stout spring on my DPs and after feeling the power of the NoBS, I’m not convinced they would meet my needs.

Not experienced enough to know strong from weak but I can tell you that you don’t want to put your finger in a Duke DP. That joker will bring a tear to the eyes!!
Occasionally get caught in a 550 and I’ll take that way before I’d take getting caught in a Duke.

I have Dukes, Griz and Zs. 75% of them are at least 7 years old and a couple are older. Those springs are still pretty strong. Compare your 7-year old Griz with a new NoBS or anything else you’re going to buy and you’ll feel the difference

Someone had an add in trapper and predictor caller a few years ago ( a dozen dp’s Of any kind mix and match for dozen price ) I bought as many different traps as I could buy. At the time I had zero dp’s So I wanted to try out as many as I could . When I first got them I would have told you to buy the fb1’s just for the ease of setting , the one I’ve got will no longer stay set and it’s the only one I’ve ever had a coon pull out of. I guess the all have pluses and minuses but these days if I need a dp I usually reach for the z trap and I can’t even say why .

Yea I know , no help at all !

One thing to consider is the stabilizer and what type of soil you'll be using them in. I'm in mud/soft soil a fair amount and every Duke I now set goes into a separate holder/stablizier. Coon pull those right out of mud and leave the trap laying on the ground far too often.
