I have two dogs in my house one is an older terrier poodle mix and a two year old yelloiw lab. We used to just leave the food dish with food in it at all times. But you can't do that with this lab. She will eat all the food every time. So now they both get fed two times a day. The labs food is gone in a minute. The other dog will wander over take a look, maybe eat a piece or two anbd that's it. But the next time she comes to the dish it's empty cause the lab eats it when no one is looking. Now the little dog is hungry and runs around the house looki ng for every crumb, follows you around, just being a general pain. This has been going on for over a year. This dog is just too dumb to figure she needs to eat when her dish is filled. It's like she's a cat.

I've had at least two dogs at the same time living in my house for most of my life, sometimes three. All dogs have different eating habits. Most will eat their food right away when fed twice a day. Some will eat when they feel like it.
I had a lab who was a picky eater. I kept his food and water bowl separate from the others. I kept it in my office and he was the only dog allowed in there. It worked pretty good. I had a beagle and a lab I fed together. The lab was well-mannered and would never steal food from the beagles bowl. He was taught it was off limits and obeyed that rule. The beagle was an expert food thief, an evil genius when it came to food. Nothing was safe; dog food left in bowls, leftovers left on the counter...
In your situation I would not feed the little dog between meals. Maybe she gets hungry enough to eat at meal time. Either that or put her food somewhere the lab doesn't have access to it (if you can find such a place) or train the lab that her food is off-limits. That could be difficult. My current lab is a hard head and kinda dumb. He's been disciplined multiple times for getting in the garbage. Yet he will still stick his head in the trash can right in front of me! He's lucky he's the best darn hunter I've ever owned.
Eh...wot?

I have a cur/airedale female who begs (people) and bulliy’s (my other dogs) her way through life. No food is safe from her unless it’s in your hands. By far the smartest dog I’ve ever had. Also the most loyal. I can tell you what we do. My other dogs are fed under our watch to make sure they have enough. Sometimes we feed them separately. My plott/cur male does self regulate. He’s very good natured but when he feels like he’s getting ripped off he eventually takes matters into his own hands we end up with a rip roaring dog fight right in the kitchen. They’re an even match and hard to break up. She usually settles down for a while after that. It happens about once a year when we get complacent.

Lugnut...i stopped a garbage dumping lab in one session...put a set mouse trap in the garbage can, one time and he will convince himself there is a monster in there... I was going to say the same thing after reading Lugnuts post but you beat me to it! It does work very well. In garbage cans toilet paper and I've even seen it rigged up IN a toilet with tape to break the potty drinking habit. Works immediately.

caught mine getting her own bone out of the box this morning. LOL Our Australian Shepherd will help himself to the Milk-bone box if you leave the pantry door cracked open. He'll only take 1 at a time.

I was going to say the same thing after reading Lugnuts post but you beat me to it! It does work very well. In garbage cans toilet paper and I've even seen it rigged up IN a toilet with tape to break the potty drinking habit. Works immediately. Had a Doberman that was a terror on getting into the garbage. Tried the hot peppered eggs, mouse traps and dosed in Tabasco sauce to no avail. Finally put a fence charger in the other room and a wire around the top of the trash can with a mat of rabbit wire the trash can sat on. One shot was all it took and she would run if you picked up the trash can. Got the ex wife twice before got the dog though.

This has been going on for over a year. This dog is just too dumb to figure she needs to eat when her dish is filled. It's like she's a cat. And the trainer has dealt with it for over a year? Every dog is different and could be trained in various ways. Dogs like that need a little more attention and may need to be supervised while eating for a period of time, so the handler/trainer/owner can properly correct the behavior. Repetition with good training and time. Your dog will only learn if it is trained/taught, if the trainer lacks the knowledge to effectively train their pet, it isn't the pets fault.

Don't feed the little dog until he is hungry.
