Look how close that coyote's front feet are to what's he's smelling. Blows that 9" back and 2" offset out the water...
I've got videos on my YouTube of coyote almost hyperextending their necks so much to give a nervous sniff. 12" back wouldnt of caught em. All depends on how their feeling.
i think id throw whatever lure you're using right out the window
You're entitled to your opinion....
I have TONS of footage of canine reaction to lure and bait from all different angles... The reaction to roll is a full commitment to working a set! At that point they like the smell so much they want to wear it (like a badge of honor!)...
The key would be in trap placement, and paying attention to what animals do on the initial approach... Everyone of those animals committed in my opinion!!!

Look at the time stamp that coyote walked, rolled and stayed around for over 3 full minutes with a camera flashing and no food to be found... There's something to be said for that!!!

There's a thought out there that a lure or bait that causes rolling is bad. Which obviously rolling on your trap bed = an empty trap. But why do they roll? They want to wear the lure. So if you don't put the lure on the ground whee they can't touch it...they won't roll. That's why when people talk about rub sets, they want the lure at shoulder or face height of the target animal
