I have a 99 Pontiac grand prix. The care runs like a million bucks. But when placed in drive it goes approximately 20 to 30 feet. Then its like it goes into neutral and there is nothing in no gears. No slipping just plain nothing. Then you shut the car off and wait approx. 3 min and same deal everytime it moves the same amount and nothing and then start over etc. Thanks for any and all help.

Automatic? Sounds like the bands are shot.

I agree it could be bands. It feels electrical in my mind, but I can't put a finger on what it would be. Ran excellent this morning and sat in lot all day. Then start tonight. It works like clockwork everytime and then basically resets and works again. I kinda thought that with the bands it would do it all the time. When it does good it works well and shifts and all works , until it goes into neutal phase. Its an odd deal for sure. Kinda thinking PCM maybe or could be solenoid. But usually its one solenoid and would work some on the others. maybe not though

I had a Pontiac Grand Am that malfunctioned similar to yours. I took it to Amoco and they told me I needed a new transmission. I then had it towed to a small garage, that my Grandfather recommended. They replaced a small spring clip, on the bottom of the gear shift for $74.00 and my car ran fine. Without the clip my car would pop out of gear.

Yes, my Grand Am would move again if shut down and started up again. I was able to limp it into Amoco that way, a short distance at a time.

Had a Ranger PU once with a slip. Garage drained all transmission fluid they could, changed the filter, and topped it off with tractor hydraulic fluid. Better than when it was new, but time to trade.

Some say that the cause its genetic, others say its choice. I say that it is a form of mental illness. Bless their hearts.
