My favorite one is the night the bear ate Goombaw. I still have the same reaction as when I first read it when I was a kid... I laugh so hard, I cry and can't catch my breath. I read his stories to my kids and even my wife enjoys them. Which one is your favorite?

I think the name of my favorite is, "A Good Deed Undoes". I have all his books, but is been years since I've picked one up.

My favorite was one where he made "whomper" the heavy duty slingshot, and tossed it to the guy at the outdoors contest. Rancid was only one able to pull it back.
The story of his first deer was good too (on his bike).

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I remember... couldn't wait for the next issue of Outdoor Life and going right to the last page to read Patrick McManus! I do have most of his books, it's been a while, I'll have to get them out. He-hee!

Let's go Brandon!

Can't remember what story it was in but when he said " Even a fish stick once knew the glories of the deep " and " a goose will honk but never wave " made about roll out of my chair. A great story teller...d2

Too many great ones for me to pick a favorite. Anything involving the sister, "Patricia the Troll" was good for some belly laughs but it was hard to read anything he wrote without at least chuckling. The man was a comedic genius.

I have two sets of his entire library, one for home and another at camp.

Eh...wot?

I read his stories in Field & Stream and looked forward to every issue. He and Gene Hill are my favorite outdoor writers.

We bought every one of the books - paperbacks and read them aloud on long road trips to the wilderness. We had no television. We also read them aloud at home on cold winter evenings. Wife and son and I would take turns reading trying to add suitable voices. We laughed so hard it hurt.

My favorite is the story where for an entire summer he and Eddy Muldoon saved their urine in canning jars. They stored the jars in the hot attic of a garage. I believe they jars fell on Eddy’s father.

It is time to read them again. Son is now 40 years old and lives across the country.

It was a long time ago so I do not remember who wrote it .But the author had several different takes on the expression He who hesitates is lost . One was about a compass company named Tates . They made defective compasses and his take was he who has a Tate's is lost . Then it was about a witch named Tessa. She would always cast a curse on her opponent by causing them to have head lice . His take on that was He who Tessa hates is loused. There where others but I do not remember what they where . McManus and Gene Hill where worth the price of the magazine

"Rancid Crabtree and the Demon Bat" Pat and Crazy Eddie make a giant, man carrying, kite out of tarp and bamboo, then steal a quarter mile of the neighbor ladies clothes line as string. Patrick tries it with some success as a light breeze comes up and gently lifts him off the ground upon which Rancid says "Well I'll be danged, I guess I better give that a try" Next sentence as the boys are walking toward home, Pat says. "Eddie, have you ever seen a wind and lightning storm come up that quick?" The picture of Rancid Crabtree whipping around in that kite amid lightning thunder and rain while an old widow lady who thought he was some kind of demon bat because of all the screams and obscenities was firing her shotgun at him paints a priceless, hilarious picture for me. My best friend during childhood and I closely relate to many of McManus's stories.
