Rigging up some new 330's (for beaver trapping in water) and want to add about 6-8' of cable with a swivel point for ease of anchoring/retrieval. Anyone ever have cable pull through a j-hook? Am I asking for trouble here? Barrel swivels are nice, but pricey, and inline offers a nice spot for a trap tag. Maybe I'm overthinking this as I've never lost a trap anchoring with flimsy trapping wire.

You won't have any trouble with that set up. I prefer to put my trap tag on the cable through the hole in the tag when building cables.

I use wire and hook my swivels like this. [Linked Image]

I have 8' of cable on all my beaver sized BGs I just don't see any need for a swivel In the system. But It sure Isn't going to hurt If you decide to do It.

I just added some homemade 9 ga swivels to some 330 RBG's a few days ago since they didn't come cabled or chained. 18 " of cable with another homemade swivel on the other end. Thinking I might do this to all my BG's.

You can also cable it directly to the swivel the same way that it’s done with snare end swivels—-pass the cable through the hole, add a washer, and add a stop. This is how I usually set up my DPs.

If your J-hooks are closed, your way will work fine. Those universal swivels are the only connectors a lot of people use

Or use a box swivel box (without the j-hooks) with 2 washers and 2 stops so no loop is necessary. I prefer mini steel cable ends for stops.
