Keep them in the water. You don't have to use a drowner, just make sure they cant reach dry land. Stake your chain out in the water, straight away from shore. Doesn't matter if the water's only 1 inch deep, they won't chew. This^^keep their feet wet. They aren’t going to stick their head underwater to chew.

I think it was in first t-man book? one of them anyway I did a article on moding 1 1/2s into DJs. Not the most efficient method maybe, as I had only simple hand tools and my welder. But I have a pretty good pile of the original style Victor DJs made in the 70s and I moded some of my plain ones. Just because I could. I first bought the DJs because I could trail set coon with them, I seldom trap them by water.. Then clean them up and use them on the fox line as back ups when ran short plain 1 1/2s. We don't have any fox numbers worth trapping now and with coyotes I have more 1 3/4s.. So I moded some of the plain jaws 1 1/2s to DJs instead of selling them.. Of course I now own way more traps of all kids so have 160s and DPs. Thing is I can trail set one of them DJs on trail in pasture where a coni won't work coon walk around it. The DJs still have their place on my line the way I trap.
