We have 10 laying hens and they have been doing pretty good with the cold. But with this cold snap we're getting an egg a day last couple days.
How's it going where it's really cold?

According to my sons daily notes. We are down to 30% of the hens laying.

My egg production has been pretty steady so far this winter. I have one light inside the coop and one outside that are on a timer, gives them sixteen hours of light a day. It made a big difference when I installed the timer.

Unusual cold does slow them down some.

Eh...wot?

Our chickens are laying about the same but by the time we can collect them, they are frozen solid and cracked open.

Had the same problem so I made a nest box with a slanted bottom and a lid outside the box so they can't get to them.
Kinda hard to tell which one is the culprit unless she has egg on her face!

I was always told to butcher an egg eater immediately before the rest of the flock picks up her bad habit.

Eh...wot?

True, never thought of that. Luckily, I've never had an egg-eater.

Eh...wot?

I agree with ya, how do you determine which one?

My grandpa always had us warm up table scraps and potato skins up when it gets cold and they didn't slow down laying. I keep scraps - meat and fat from my deer and elk and warm it up to feed them when its cold. Been working so far.

I just run 1 red heat lamp (250W) that heats the insulated coop (Barn looking lawn shed) to between 40-50 above in the winter months, when it's cold like now I close the outside door until it passes. The heat lamp has a guard as the birds flop up and down to the roost but the base of the bulb has a inch of white light that helps with the egg laying.

I have 12 hens and average 6-8 eggs a day. Their all young hens from the last spring.

This morning I went out, 3 frozen eggs. The coup is just your average utility shed.

I have the entrance door on the south side(sun). 3 windows for additional light.

"NO" heat lamps. If power would fail, now their getting colder than what they were used to.

My birds have feathered feet. And they roost on 2x4's that are wide side up.

I agree with law dog, you need some heat source and any meat/veggy craps you got.they love bread. we have a 10x8 coop insulated and a 150 watt/110 volt thermal black bulb heatemeter over the entrance door.this keeps our chickens from getting to cold that it uses all their energy to stay warm.i just came in from gathering eggs, twice aday once in am and in afternoon its 15 degrees in coop, 30to 40 below zero chill factor last couple days. we have isa brown and barred rock and they are doin good see no falloff of eggs.we give ours scratch every day also besides their steady supply of chicken mash. you can find the heatemeter in the reptile products,it does not give out light.

I don't have any chickens under light, but I have a lot that are in the 6 to 8 month old range that are laying well anyway. My older chickens are laying sporadically at best. In my quail, which are under light, the ones that just reached laying age are laying well and the older ones poorly. We went from 200 some button quail eggs a day to 40 some. Coturnix quail are laying 80 some eggs a day, which is where they were before the cold weather started, because of new recruitment. I should be up to 240 coturnix eggs a day by the end of February.
