This past weekend Saturday into Sunday I went out and covered the majority of my sets with 12"x10" sheets of wax paper as they were calling for 8 to 12" of snow, figured it would save me some time. We ended up getting 4 to 5 inches and a lot of rain following, then back down to negatives through the night. I uncovered all of them and they looked just like I did when I covered them. Yesterday on one of the farms I didn't get a chance to cover and tend to before the storm hit and I ended up picking up a nice red fox and I'm still wondering how? Not only did I believe the traps would be froze down but with a few inches of ice on top it blows my mind. Just goes to show how durable and how much abuse these things can take! The trap I was using was a #2 Duke (Round Jaw) slight mods. The side by side had about 2 inches of ice on it while checking traps after the storm. Took quite a bit of time to thaw out haha.

Sounds exactly like what we got here. I freeze proofed mine with a mix of Glycol and fox urine and once I cleared the heavy crust off the traps were still functional. My 65lb. golden lab is running on top of the crust as are the coyotes from the tracks I've seen, my 130lb. red lab is having a bit of trouble getting around though.

Yep exactly what I have been noticing. More rain in the forecast this week, probably going to be pulling quite a bit this week.

Were getting freezing rain here right now. I should have closed all my CRs today since they are now talking about another 8" or more of snow on top of the 7" we have.
Going to have to open and close all those CRs tomorrow that Is If I can get to them.

Weather been screwy here for me to. We had over a foot of snow last week I ended up taking my tractor and blade and plowing paths to some sets just so I could get to them with my 4 wheeler. We have about 6 or 7 inches left right now and it raining pretty good havn't looked to see if it freezing or nocking some of the snow back..

Had some snow down south and freezing rain. Had a coyote work one of my sets to death (tracks in the snow).
He tripped the pan but the frozen ground jammed the jaws open... Stinks!

I had a set that coyote walked all over. Peed about a ft away twice. Tracks were everywhere. Checked trap frozen solid! Guess I need to remember to salt after rains come through. Trials of a newbie!

I watched a squirrel dig it’s body length into the crusted snow to get breakfast this morning. If critters can smell it, they’ll work it. In the case of the squirrel, it probably just remembered where he buried it. Still though, it went to considerable effort to get the food.

I remember reading a Tom Krause book entitled, Dynamite Fox Trapping. In it, he talked about a red fox that dug through a couple feet of snow to get to the lure. The trap had been in place for 6 weeks as I recall and it hadn’t been freshened in all that time. Canine noses and determination are all it takes if they’re hungry.
