I've case skinned them before and just froze. Got a buck a piece for them. Also heard, split them like a beaver and tack to a piece of plywood to dry. Tails = leave bone in and freeze flat and straight. Check with your fur buyer and see if they are buying or Mepps to buy the tails.

fur in, on a mink board. Remove the bone and tack it out. Most of the time you won't get anymore (about a dollar) but sometimes, in the right market you do better than you will on possum.

A "half truth" is still a whole lie.

As far as I know, red (pine, piney's, chickarees) squirrels are what they (Canada) wants. Price varies around a dollar plus. I skin and flesh mine and dry on a weasel board. Remove after one day. Mepps will not buy Red squirrel tails but do buy Grey and Fox squirrel tails (bone in) around .22 cents for prime winter tails.

Mepps doesn't pay as well as the fur buyer, but then the furbuyer will take the reds and Mepps will take the rest. They will give you double the value as credit toward the purchase of lures.

FHA told us that they only buy the red squirrels for lining - no fox or grays. Mepps will buy- check out their websight about buying squirrels

As a nuisance trapper who traps hundreds a year that sure would be good info! (If he'd tell you). I've been feeding mine to the penned animals that I collect urine and droppings from. If I had a market for the winter hides, I'd skin those too!

hammerdown-brown : you may need to check into it more...but i am to believe it is illegal to sell squirrel hides in IL. Im not sure though, but would definately check into it first.

I do know its illegal to trap them...just a heads up.

nafa use to take gray and fox squirrels pelts. not sure if they still do. our season here opens in the last of May. I put up 60 some one year but only got .80 avg. Many of them were shedding that were taken during the summer.(not worth it to me to ship anymore) Now I send to mepps and trade for Mepps Aglia spinners.(tails only with bone left in) They give you 2x the money if you trade for lures. over 50 they pay postage. They give you no trade for shedding tails but I let them made that judgement. By saving all tails it help me get over the 50 count. Good lures for white bass fishing around here on the river or at our big lakes.

Talked to a guy in MO once that traded the tails to mepps for lures then he turned around and sold the lures on ebay.
