If you have shoes like that I guarantee they will read on the inside "Hecho in Mexico"

I take it that's a road kill...? Do you have to report such a rare find to your state wildlife agency?

I know a number of people here (mostly libs) who are big into birding and other wildlife "seen" lists. The main one I know was very excited to watch a coatimundi empty a humming bird feeder while on he was on vacation in AZ over Christmas. Seeing your critter there, these people would be half wetting themselves because they had seen it in person and crying a river that it was dead.

How often do you see one of those things...?

I have never seen one of these. A distant cousin of mine that lives in the State of Tamaulipas in Mexico sent me this picture. He said it was a Gato Montes Leopardus and is rare in his area East of Ciudad Victoria but several have been seen or killed there lately around Lake Guerrero.

Link to the story dated February 2007.

You will need to translate it to read the story but the person that took the photo said is was in July 2006.

Sounds like your distant cousin is pulling your leg.

He probably is as one of his sons works for SEMARNAP which is the Federal Game Agency in Mexico and you know how those game officers are.

I was thinking it was an ocelot (which would have made my critter list folks wet themselves if it would have been in TX) but I see that ocelots have stripes (more or less) instead of spots.

I caught a cat similar to that, just not as spotty. It was beautiful. The thing that stuck out to me which made it distinctly different than a house cat, was the tail. It fur was extremely densely furred. It was short haired, but felt almost as dense as a cattail seed head. I am still kicking myself for tossing it the ditch.
I am guessing that it was just a feral house cat which was a genetic throwback from its distant lineage.
