Carry overs from previous sales? Were yours North westerns, North Centrals or semi heavies?

Yep carryovers. The large majority are North Central with a couple on either side of that. Mostly selects too

Yeah, I'm sure they certainly weren't Western semis. I had 2 of those that were 3-4xl SDA that only went for $4 a piece. Must have been the 4 color but still, WTH!

Exactly!! First of all I don't like private treaty sales. Second of all after the hype of heavy Coon being worth a little bit more this year, these weren't. These ones were down from last year.

Would have done almost as well at a country buyer

They are worth more in my mind but those were part of the "DEAL".

Yep, and I could have probably sold them green for the same price. I wish I had the time and technique to produce more and finish faster then I could split lots up among various venues of selling but I don't as of now. I didn't have any coon at the first NAFA sale last year and had no mid-Nov through mid-Dec caught critters so I'm very curious to see what happens at the Feb/Mar auction this year, especially with the 2 5x I sent up. I know the one is a 4 color (reddish tint) at best. Let's see if some Western Northerns magically appear this time around and my percentage of Western Semis goes down to its typical small proportion of my pelts.

Wonder what would happen to fur prices - IF - every trapper just held on to their fur and didn't sell to anyone for a year?

If there were no coons at the sale, the price of the 3.5 million plus ranch furs would go up a tic or two say 2-3 %. You go ahead and wait, I will continue to ply my heritage even when prices don't cover my cost.

My heritage was trapping for a living. I think this goes back thousands of years. No money. No heritage.

Garment makers would simply switch to a comparable alternative, and may never return to the species with held.

And that's why I haven't set a coon trap in 3 years now.

OK - everyone take it easy - not "bashing" anyone's heritage, just thinking out loud...

They would go up. Even if they switched to a higher cost alternative, the price of the higher cost alternative should go up. As much carryover and spec fur that is out there, my guess on many species, there would be no problem finding what you need although possibly at higher prices. Right now there are plenty of cheaper alternatives to using coyote, but manufacturers are making money with coyote so why change? It is trim, so the cost of the trim to the cost of the rest of the product may be insignificant either way.

For Canada goose, there is no alternative to coyote. The only other ruff that sheds frost besides coyote is wolf and wolverine, and the numbers of those is not there. There is lots of fur that can be used for trim in a fashon application, but not for a practical useful ruff on a cold weather garment.
