So what can I do to keep these things out of my dp's or is it just the cost of doing business. I hate to take a opossum when they aren't worth a dime and they really don't hurt the world none. I mean they're pretty much a lil garbage disposal and don't really carry any diseases either. Generally the front legs get pretty torn up from the dp, so I hate to let em loose like that. Also if I were to release em, now they know where the free meal is.

The only way to avoid catching possums is to use no bait of any kind, even some lures attract them. Never turn them loose unless you want to catch them again for practice, put them on boards. I've gotten $6 in Canada a few times and never less than a buck locally.
One observation is that possums are out early and coons a bit later (in general) so if you can set the DPs at dusk you will miss some possums. That early out is the reason possums find and fill traps before the coons and fox get up. In good possum country you can have all your traps full before bedtime and do remakes.

I saw some tanned ones at the tanners and was surprised how good they look. We don't have them here, but if we did I would tan a few.

I've had this same problem with my k9 sets. The darned things waiting for me in the morning - just setting there - grinning!

All I know is quit using 'possum bait and swith to something else - what ever that might be!! LOL! crazy

Every possum I catch bears a scary resemblance to Nancy Pelosi when it grins.

Haha, not sure what part of the country these possum came from but they were furred quite well. After seeing the prices I got for mink (5 and 3) I would have been glad to trade a couple for some well furred grinners.

It's been studied that the average possum will eat up to 5,000 ticks a year. I've been letting them go.

When someone figures out how to keep an opossum out of a coon, fox, or coyote dry land set they will have a fortune in knowledge!!!!!!! Oh yes,,, 2 ground nesting birds will eat more ticks than a 15 lb. opossum ever would so think what an entire clutch of young birds will eat. I would discourage anyone from releasing a legally captured opossum if they have an interest in game and non-game birds.
