I am considering switching to earth anchors from rebar stakes. I have some question for guys that use them. So they work pretty good in most soil? Ours here varies from rocky to sandy/clay. I am looking at buying a dozen Duckbill anchors with cables to see how I like them. Any brands you guys prefer or ones you would stay away from?

Thread on here recently about someone loosing catch because the rock cutting the cable when it was driven in. Sounded like from several people that cable and rocks dont play together well. I started with cable and ended up with chain on mine. Wish I would of just started with chain

Chain be dammed. You can't drive those things in rocky ground.

Not solid rock. But around here you can get into some gravely ground that you can drive then in.

I have been using Freedom brand wolf fang cable stakes for five years and have never lost an animal with them. No problem with the cable breaking or fraying and they will hold a tank. I use the 1/8 diameter cable for yotes and the 3/32 diameter for fox and coon. I've used the 12 inch and 15 inch lengths with no issues. Occasionally they can be difficult to drive in certain soils but I usually find a place to get them in. If I have a real difficult time getting them in about 25% of the time they will not come out with a puller. In that case they stay where they are at. At the cost per stake its no big deal and usually that location will be used again so I can just reuse the stake in place the next season. If you choose to buy this type of stake make sure and spend the extra money on a good driver. I tried the cheaper drivers and they just bent the first time any resistance was encountered.

I did try the chain super stakes and had a few actually break when trying to extract them.

Pipe anchors hold up best in slightly stoney ground, about 12" , 1/8" cable

Don't use the Berkshires, even the HDs if you have hard soil, not to mention rocks. I used them for 2 seasons & they're junk. Went to the Super Stakes & love em!

I tried superstake this year for the first time. I'm sure they work well in some soils, I even have some in the ground now. However, i set a farm a few weeks ago that had gravely, sandy ground and lost a coyote, trap and all. I had them on 18 inches of 1/8" cable and the cable didn't break, the stake pulled. They also pulled too easy for me to trust in a creek bottom on the same farm. Personally, I believe the holding power is dependent on the type of ground, because so many people like them, and I have pulled some that held excellent. I mention this because your ground sounds similar to where I lost the trap. Good luck with whatever you try, I'm going back to cross staked rebar for now.

Thank you guys. I may buy a dozen Super Stakes to see how I like them and if I don't, may stay with the good ol' double stake rebar.

Once you use a superstake you will toss you wolf fands out. I had some of both beginning of this season and now only have superstake. I started with the fangs. After driving a few of the superstake I put them on all my traps and gave all my fangs to a friend who was just starting again and didn't have much money or equipment. He used a superstake and he is buying them for next season. They are great in my soul. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Wish I had more time to trap....

Super stakes on chain, and you can use them over and over. Nothing pulls them. I love them. I’ve used them in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee

For once I admit I am agreeing with Hal. I tried many brands and I trap a lot of potato ground that I think grows rocks. Rebar is easier for me in these situations.

I like super stakes and wolf fangs with chain, the ground here is pretty rocky but they seem to work well. Duckbills don't drive very well in comparison.

I've only used Berkshire HDs. I used to use them on dry land, and had issues with the tips bending while pounding my driver, and hated trying to dig them up, or god forbid, having to leave them in the ground. I'm too cheap for that. Now I only use them in mud, like in creeks and water's edge. I can push them in by hand and pull them out by hand easily, too. I just use rebar on dry land now.
