Identifying individuals from their distant genetic relatives, a technique called long-range familial searching, is a potent alternative to the types of DNA searches commonly available to cops.

I have never murdered or raped anyone so I don't think this is an invasion of privacy. Both my wife and I have said we would never send our DNA to one of the sites that do this testing. We believe these companies privacy policy is probably lacking and we have no interest in contributing.

The article goes on to say that "GEDMatch, which currently houses 1.2 million profiles from folks who’ve had their DNA analyzed at places like 23andMe and Ancestry, can now be used to identify at least 60 percent of all Americans with European Ancestry, regardless of whether they themselves have ever been tested."

Will this data base eventual deter these horrific crimes, Maybe more-so than the criminal penalties?

I don't know if it will deter. These types of criminals tend not to think rationally.

It will help give closure to victums' families and boost investigators tenacity.


Edit: for the same reason people are hesitant to provide their DNA to companies like 23&Me is the same reason I plan on taking the test. If my DNA can help take a criminal off the street or vindicate a suspect, I'd view that has honorable.

Perhaps they'll use this data to take all the guns away from various genotypes . Let's ...say...start with the people of color, and Native Americans, since they didn't start out with guns anyhow.

Or maybe the muslims and ragheads since they are most likely to go all terrorist on everybody.

I like this profiling, it's fun.

One of my sisters done it to see about the family tree and she told me that you can block to make any of it to put out to be used. That is what she did .

Or maybe Insurance Companies and the Industrial/Medical Complex will use this Genetic information for their "Death Panels" to decide your genetic makeup profile is not worth spending the money on to treat or cure you, or decide to abort you at birth for having "Bad genes".

The possibilities are endless......What could possibly go wrong ? frown

Walleyed, This very thing has already been tried BUT the cat got out of the bag and it sank the ship of the people and companies that tried medical profiling. It cost them $$$$$$ in law suits. It was done thru a class one railroad and it's medical team trying to predetermine their risks associated with hiring certain individuals. Can you say PROFILING !

Doubt it will be a deterrent other than getting criminals off the streets sooner. A number of historic cold cases have already been solved, most notably the east area rapist/original night stalker. Guys who thought they got away with crimes from years ago now have to think twice. Interestingly, EARONS stopped his massive spree right about the time DNA testing was developed.

DNA testing with it's current databases can answer more than just the questions on your mind.

I listened to a radio talk show with a couple experts. Their information, and the experience of several that called in was eye-opening.

Many, many were shocked to find out that their daddy, wasn't. One lady said that an aunt that she had always hated turned out to be her mother.

I just got my DNA results from Ancestry a few days ago. They identified my Father as my Father and numerous cousins, out to many, many levels of separation. I do think DNA will become an even more useful tool for solving crimes as the databases grow.

Only half the genes from a parent pass to you. It is possible for full siblings to receive all entirely different genes, except for the mitchondrial ones, so there will still be some unsolvable crimes, if DNA is the only evidence. Don't commit crimes and leave DNA evidence and you probably won't have to worry about being arrested.

I agree with Hal. Big Brother is watching. Did we forget the terrible lesson of Nazi Germany and the concentration camps?

What maybe should be scarier to people than just DNA test results. Their also doing genetic engineering with hope of having vaccine or drugs that would target the genetic error or cells that maybe gives you cancer or heart disease. So think of that now from a military weapon view. Fly over spread the gas or bug and you do what Hitler wanted. Be like Round up ready corn only right DNA gets ya a pass.
That is something to worry on.
