Hey thanks Gary...… A buddy and I were planning on leaving before the new year for the pine ridge area to try our luck at calling or at least seeing a lion ( I know chances are slim, but you never know)during the season that starts Jan 1st. But I called him this morning and he seems to have caught a bug.... dizzy, nausea …. hope it's not the flu but I guess it's going around in Beatrice. A 12 year old boy died from complications related to a bad flu, just a few days ago. We can always leave in a few days, but some feel season will be over shortly as the quota the state set of 2 females or 4 total cats per unit will be met rather quickly. We will see.

Consider the area north of Rushville near Whiteclay. A birdy told me that's a well populated area. Don't know about access, however.

Gary, that would be the north unit.... everything north of the HWY 20 is one unit. Between HWY 20 and to the south to the Niobrara river is the second unit. Hwy 27 is the east boundary for both. The north unit is private land only. The south can be hunted both private land and public... where hunting is allowed. I have some spots lined up on private in the south which is where my tag is. But there were a lot of comments from folks saying the cats are seen on public lands all the time. They don't know boundaries. And from what I read they put lot of miles behind them almost every day. Wouldn't care if a local wanted to tag along as we call and help us find some good canyons or spots to call.... someone who knows the roads. I do know those roads up there can get a guy in some trouble if your not use to them.

I know the fella that harvested the first legally permitted lion in NE. It was tagged....he harvested it near Whiteclay, and just weeks before it had been been in Wyoming west of the Black Hills.

Not much help to you now but I was south of rushville on the niobrara river the first week of December and saw a really good set of cat tracks. Rancher said the cat comes through every so often. Pretty cool for an Eastern guy to see Mountian lion tracks.
