Today I observed and followed an old family tradition. My stepson Aaron Hudson and i snapped all our foot hold traps, and cinched down all of our snares in observance of Christmas.

This tradition was passed on to me by my Father who is 70 years old this year, and to him by his father (my Grandfather "Pop" DiSalvo), I believe Pop started this tradition in the 1930's some time.

My old Partner Arnold Favinger and I also followed the tradition when we trapped in the 90's. My children and I also diligently did the same every year, we'd go snap traps and cinch snares for Christmas.

Because as Pop once said to me when we were snapping his traps one frigid Christmas eve "Nothing should die on Christmas." I for one fully agree.

Merry Christmas to all, peace on earth, good will toward all men.

Mike

Wow! My son and I did the same thing when he lived here and we were hitting it hard. There was a hard-core trapper, who taught us a lot, that parked his rig near us every morning.
Every Christmas morning we would go down and leave a plate of cookies on the hood of his truck for when he got in. Some traditions that may be seen by some as whacky, are good for the soul.

Merry Christmas!

1975...I had graduated in June that year. Was running my first full time line. Christmas Eve, I got up as usual at 5 am, was fixing breakfast when Ma came down the hallway. Dad got up a few minutes later. We all three sat, ate breakfast and started talking. After awhile Dad asked if I hadn't better get going to check my traps. I told him no, I had tripped them all the day before. That I just didn't feel right catching critters on Christmas. That was/is the only time I ever seen my Ma cry over something to do with me trapping.

I pull or trip all my traps on the 23rd no matter what. Even my ADC work traps.

Almost makes me feel bad that we're out setting traps as we speak(tween spots righr now) BUT
All I want for christmas is a truckload of beaver and a cat or yote or 2. smile

It is a cool tradition but we've had so much water this year we gotta go when we can and todays a good day..for a change.

Cathryn, good luck, and Merry Christmas! It was really ironic running into Jerry out on the line after talking with you last week. Hope you fill up the truck! I did catch a muskrat that Jerry left behind for me today in one of my mink sets.

Great tradition !
I'm trapping in a town where Coyotes ate a Maltese, a cat named Chuckie, and another hapless unsuspecting mixed breed ankle biter--all in a week. Two of the ring leaders have gone to see St. Pete. With some luck some more will pass Santa on their way there tonight. If they do, I know some people who are going to really have a Merry Christmas.

I feel sorry for all the animals that died the day before Christmas.

So, I'm going to feel worse about myself tomorrow than I do now? I'll get over it quick, it's been a dry year. Great tradition, though!
