Can anybody recommend a good tannery to tan deer skins hair off? My local taxidermists suck at this. They charge way too much (tacking their fee onto the tannery fee) and I've gotten skins back that weren't even mine!
Eh...wot?

Lugnut I know a guy that has been retired from the taxidermy business for a few years now. Jim Rollins is his name. One of the best in the business (imo, which doesn't amount to squat). Try googling "Hinckley Outfitters" or "Rollins Taxidermy". If he won't do the job he'll lead you to the right place. check your pm for his cell number.

Sounds like this thread is more of a bash the taxidermist for trying to make a living. Why would he not charge you his fee and the tannery fee?

Try calling Moyles....see what they charge Moyles does not do hair off tanning. There used to be several tanneries in the west that would do hair off tanning of game hides. Environmental regulations caused all of them to shut down.

That’s why I stopped using my original taxidermist for deer hide tanning. The last time I used him I gave him a large buck skin with two bullet holes in it. I got back a fawn skin with multiple cuts in the hide.
Eh...wot?

I was softening a braintan deer hide at an art show. When you push the softening tool into the hide, it can appear as if you are poking holes, but it's just moisture being moved around. One man watching asked if the holes would heal. Lol. "No, the deer is dead."
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
