I know this question might sound silly. But what type of fur would make the best snowmobile seat cover?

Otter; all other furs are rated based on otter being rated at 100%. I can't remember which is rated lowest, either chinchilla or rabbit at 5%.9

I actually just put one on my 4 wheeler. I used a coyote. It was slightly red and slightly rubbed in one spot so GWF did not want it. I home tanned using the orange bottle and tied it on using the 2 front leg holes. Pretty warm for around here.

What does this mean? Who is doing the rating? What is it rated on?

I'd think beaver would be a pretty good choice too based on how tough the leather is and how warm the pelts.

Beaver is a very durable fur and otter. Thick leather long hair doesn’t hold up well as guard hair breaks off giving a rubbed look

Beaver and otter...ok I will keep my eyes open for some. Thanks guys. I thought beaver too but was unsure of the leather durability.

Forget fur. The proven materials were sheepskin, horse and buffalo hides. I would go with the sheep about as a wooly can grow it.

bearhide hands down.Very big in Quebec for the trailriders.Use Velcro strips to hold it on.Big with bikers too in summer.
I always had a couple bearhides in the sleigh when bringing the kids on the trapline in winter when they were small. At lunch time just flip the sleigh upside down shake out the bearhides and youhad a comfy couch to sit on . [Linked Image]

Since otter is the most durable fur it is given the arbitrary rating of 100%. Lets say muskrat will wear out in half the time as otter it would be given a rating of 50%.
I'll see if I can find an online reference; the reference I cited was from a long out of print book titled "Fur", a great book if you find it.

I’ve seen a few made with caribou which has hollow hair and holds heat very well. Shoot, one fart at the start of the day and your seat will be warm all day.
