Does anyone trap frozen lakes for canines? It seems muskrat houses are magnets for coyotes, I picked up a few coyotes in cattails with CR’s but I felt I should’ve done better last year. Typically land access points are private so I would rather stay on the ice… anyone setting these spots and how? I checked the archives but couldn't narrow the search enough.

The problem I see Is If you set these huts and when the coyote destroys the hut are you going to be charged with destroying the hut?

If It were me I'd be trying to get permission and set those spots where the coyotes leave the Ice.
Or maybe just toss out a chunk of burnt wood To act as scent post. Or this might be the perfect time to use the tire set. You could even use the tire for a drag. It has great eye appeal and you can stash the bait up In the interior of the tire.
Bedding the trap on the Ice Is going to be the problem.

Keets, Thanks- Jeff has great videos- I'll check it out.
Beav- I was looking for options off the house for the exact reason you mentioned. i.e.; hay mound set or some other method where traps don't freeze in.

Can you snare the cattail runs with a rebar tangle rod?
If not I'd look at the wilderness page and see how the northern guys set their snowmobile tracks off the back of the sled. It sure works here, but we don't have coyotes, if you know what I mean. Cordless drill and warm battery is your friend as is any large log you can pull onto the ice as a pee spot/ drag.
Good for fox too.

Osky- appreciate the input, In Wisconsin we can only utilize Cable Restraints and we can not have any entanglement or even vegetation over 1/2" in diameter in reach of the CR. I'll check the wilderness page to see if the methods are applicable to CR's.

Best way I have found to snare them on the ice in cattails or frags is to freeze a large bait (deer guts are best) in the ice by chopping a hole and putting the bait into the water so at least some of it freezes in. Snare the trails thru the cattails or frags, if there are not many, tramp a few trails thru the vegetation yourself. Snares are anchored and supported by drilling a hole thru the ice and fastening a cable anchor in the ice, same with support wire Just do not drill support wire hole all the way thru, put wire in and then add a little water. I drilled holes with a brace and bit but now-a-days a battery operated drill would be easier.
If you are worried about setting a trap on a muskrat hut and it being destroyed, set your trap on a slide wire anchored in the ice 10 feet from the hut. I always found beaver lodges to be the best draw stations on ice. Use your head, where there is a will there is a way!

During the mating season they love to "mark" houses but if they are in cattails too much they will get rubbed like when they hangout in sunflower too long. I always wanted to bury a trap/drag in the ice with dry dirt and see if a yote would work that but never took the time to try it. Might be a project for later this year thought if a guy let the drag freeze down it would work like a stake then as tracking a drag on a like would suck.

I hadn't thought of tire. Might have to try that as a change up

Great input guys!
I watched Jeff's video... keep it simply I guess with cold weather land techniques.
I would not have attempted to drive a stake through 7-8" of ice without pre-drilling a hole... until watching this.

Not sure if it has been mentioned. I read a few years back on HERE.
Pre set or somehow get a pole set in the ice. Core a shallow hole big enough to bed the desired trap ( maybe scrape a trench to attach the chain/cable to the post) carry water in a thermos pour the water completely over the trap. Let it freeze a thin layer of ice over the trap then suck out remaining water out with a sucking tube of some sort. Put lure or what ever on the scent post. Come back retrieve coyote. Hope I explained it clearly enough.

Yea, you can drive them thru alot of ice. But at a certain point ice becomes thick enough and you'll find it easier to pre-punch the hole with your driver or a re-rod and then push the disposable thru. Sure simple compared to the old days of spudding a hole and trying to attach a long pole to chain so it would catch under ice and not come back up. Jeff without doubt is expert on setting up on ice.

Just take some long 1/2" lags and drill them right Into the ice with your cord less drill. I would use something about 6" long.
Or just spud a hole and drop In a dead man.

The lags bolts made ice trapping fun and nothing is going to pull them.

That's a great idea... That's how we zip in the anchors for Ice Shelters

I knew if you guys had enough coffee the good ideas would start to flow.

If you want to move your snares or traps, just zip them out and go. Not leaving anything behind.
