I have rented a lockable building in the vicinity of where I was trapping. I have also rented space at a freezer locker plant.
However, with the ever growing popularity of home freezers, these plants are getting somewhat hard to find in many areas.
Adios,
45/70,

When camping and trapping, I put up or at least get it all fleshed that day. Beaver I wait till the next day unless to warm to wait.

Once fleshed, and either stretched or hung, it will last the time I am out. It is usually cold enough I don't have to worry to much about spoilage. It don't dry as quickly, but it won't spoil either.

Only trouble is a warm spell, then it gets real testy getting it all taken care of, if I am catching what I hope to anyway.

So you put up outside?? What about rain/ snow? Or is this in a tent?

I'm thinking about two options if I can't find a building nearby...one would be a tent and generator with fans...then I can put up....MAYBE..I'm still concerned about warm weather and humidity! Other option would be a freezer or two and a small generator...I know that would work.

Dan, if you are traveling why dont you get anenclosed trailer..You would be able to do all that you need inside...Or you could get 4 walled tent....

I've been thinking on that as well...only problem is ventalation. Even if I add fans, then I need some type of rain baffle. I don't think there is an *easy* solution....but I'm going to come up with something!

I either set up both wall tents, one for sleeping quarters and the other a "fur shed", or most times I use the trailer for one and one tent for the other. Depends on where I am at and how long I am staying.

Both my tents have stoves in them. One is 12x14 and the other is 10x10. Circulation is not ever been a probelm. My tents are the old style type like used at rondys. Fairly easy to control heat in them. Plus wood heat is a dry heat anyway. Make sure if ya use this method ya don't get the fur to close to the stove. I also have a skinning rig I use for just that. Just a simple set up for hand skinning.

I tried once or twice to get them to the stretchers and leave them hanging under a canopy, DO NOT TRY THAT. it didn't work worth a hoot, the birds picked at the fur, they never would dry a lick.

TJ, yes ya can....but 50 would be pushing it IMO unless ya get them there fast, and keep it cool. I would still at least get it fleshed first though. Alot safer that way. Once fleshed there is not nearly the threat of them spoiling.

I have never tried it, but an old trapper once told me he would flesh his skins then put them in cold water, running water is even better according to him. He used a sporing branch at his house in fact. Says they will last several days this way with no worry about them rotting or being harmed. He was an older Tn. hillbilly, literaly, and he knew what he was doing, so I doubt he would steer me wrong. I just never had to try it.
