I am considering trading in my 2013 Ram for a new truck. It is just shy of 100,000 miles which is right about where I like to trade them, and many dealers have some great sales right now. I have really liked the Ram, second one I have owned, and would be happy with another one. That being said I am looking at a Toyota Tundra. I also looked at a Nissan Titan yesterday and was pretty impressed with it, especially for the price.

One impressive thing on the Tundra's seems to be the resale. It appears they hold their value better than many of the other brands. One knock on the Tundra seems to be the gas mileage. From what I have read they are pretty thirsty on the road, but having never owned one I can't say for sure.

Anyway, I know there are many Tundra and Tacoma owners on here and I am looking for some honest feedback.

My 07 Tacoma (with only 120K) has left me a bit disappointed. In my opinion, it's built with suspension for a car, not a truck. Even with overload, aftermarket springs, a half-cord of light wood is about all it can handle. Very poor mileage as well (overall, I get about 15.2 mpg). I've had many models of Toyota in past years, and the Tacoma, with the 6 cylinder, standard transmission, is making me re-think the Toyota. The resale value, as you have noted, is the only thing going for it.

15.2 mpg is pretty poor for a midsize truck IMO. With mileage like that a guy is probably better off buying a full size truck.

My 2015 gets around 14.7 mpg. The 5.7 will pull anything you can hook to it. Your right on resale always good. more money made on used trucks by dealers than on new trucks.

Love my 2011 tundra. Get a lot of bang for your buck with Toyota. 120k and no mechanical issues.

I get them in the shop, and just the way ya sit in them turns me off on them. Seats too low for me, then there's that Japanese "dooing" instead of a heavier sound when shutting the door.

Off topic..........But i have a 1976 chevy 1 ton step-van, think UPS truck.
It has a carburated 350 and pushes air like a semi truck. I get just a tad under 13mpg with it climbing hills and mountains here. One would think, that with all the liteweight metals and injection technology we have today, they could build a small pick-up that gets 30mpg.

I have 2010 Tundra with 4.6 eight cyl 32 valve engine. It has a 6 speed auto transmission. It mostly gets 19 miles per galllon. It has 125,000 miles with only general maintenance required so far.
No rust as yet and I live where the roads get a lot of salt through the long winter.

I just test drove one, and didn't feel I was sitting low at all. Overall I thought it drove pretty nice.

The only thing that stops a Tundra is a gas station. I have 2014 with a 5.7 4x4. Every once in a while Iwill get 20. Hy around 60 I get 17 to 18. Average around 16.

Agree - own a 2013 4x4 and have had several Toyota trucks before that. Before retiring I put 140 miles a day on my trucks going to and from work. All the trucks had over 200K miles on them before trading / selling and one Tacoma had 350K on it.
They sit fine for me and the door closing sounds like a door closing...

Go test drive one...
Then, buy what you want - that's what I do.

I have owned one Nissan - an 07 Murano SUV - and I never want another vehicle with that name. To me it seemed like visible quality mixed with concealed junk. Just one opinion.

Bought an '07 Tundra 5.7 new and still love it. It's a sweetheart.

I have a 2004 Tacoma 4 door with 245,000 miles on it and it still runs like a new one. I'm going to try and put 500,000 miles on it or more. Just had new Bilstein shocks all around and a 2" lift on it. About 2 weeks ago I had 13 sheets of plywood on it, 3/4" thick and it rode like a champ. Not sure what the gas mileage is and really don't give a hoot. I don't run it to work anymore unless the weather is bad.

I have a Tundra the same year and engine in a two wheel drive. I just got back from a trip to Ohio, which was 1210 miles. Even going through the mountains in WV, the computer said it averaged 18.9 MPG. I don't know how accurate the truck's mileage computing is, but I thought did pretty good. It has around 180,000 miles on it.

Just bought a 2019 tundra. Nice truck. The only thing i don't like is the ABS self check it does each time you start the truck and take off. Mine has a loud clunk or bang come from the front under the hood on the drivers side. Been waiting a month for toyota rep to call. Test drove the Nissan. It felt like it had bad tie rod ends and wondered all over the road. The rear jump seats were broen. If you got them to go up, they would not go back down.

Hey Gulo, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's aren't much better in the Off Road package.

Why would you not want another Ram?

A Tundra is a dinosaur compared to what you get with a 2019 Ram.

I will give Toyota credit and companies should study their business model. They managed to dupe a large portion of the American population to pay more for outdated and inferior technology and make them feel eternally grateful for the opportunity to buy a Toyota.

The price on them Titans is nice. Nissan realizes the fact that they are behind other manufacturers with fuel mileage, technology, and features and prices accordingly. One negative about the Titan is no locking diff unless you move up to the Pro 4X.

Drove a new 2019 Ram yesterday. You get a lot for your money and they really look good.

Ok I am looking for a new truck but i want one I can reach in the bed over the sides. Besides the little ones is there one out there? I sort of consider them all to be the same quality but am basically a chevy person..........jk

They are all pretty high. The 19 Chevys have an aluminum tailgate that goes up and down real easy. Super light. I guess these manufacturers realize people can’t reach in the bed anymore so are making it easier to access from the tailgate. The new Silverado TrailBoss bed goes to my neck and I’m 6’1”.

As I said in my original post I have no issues with my Ram and would happily buy another. But, I do like to see what all is out there before I make a major purchase.

I wanted to check out the Toyota as for years I have heard so many people rave about them that I guess I was more curious than anything. I thought the Tundra drove really nice, and handled well.

Say what you want about Toyota but I can't begin to tell you how many people I know that own them. Most love them, whether a small Prius or one of their large SUV's. Their reliability seems to be first rate, and there is no disputing they hold their resale value. Evidently that resonates with many. Are these people duped? Perhaps, but 99% of them seem to love what they have and enjoy driving a reliable vehicle that safely gets them and their families where they need to go.

My big issue with the Tundra is their gas mileage. Honestly, I am surprised given how good the Japanese are at engineering that they aren't the head of the class in gas mileage. Granted the Tundra hasn't had a real makeover in years, so maybe down the road things will improve.

I took a peak at some Chevy Silverado's today. With their Black Friday sales still going on I figured why not, as they have some huge incentives right now. Funny the couple of Silverado's I looked at said they had about 44% or so of their parts coming from the US, and the trucks themselves were assembled in Mexico. In comparison the Toyota Tundra's I looked at were built in San Antonio Texas and had over 70% (74% I believe) of their parts coming from the US.

That Titan has kind of impressed me. It may not be the fanciest, or most technologically advanced truck on the market, but for the money I think it's a pretty good rig.
