I set the jaws left/right but am getting toe catches. How do I fix this?

Bigger trap. Or, you are tucking the trap too close to the bank and they are hitting the pan with their toes. Make sure your trap is as level as possible. I dig a trap bed, almost like a K-9 set when I set for beaver so I can get the trap as level as I can. I also like to set my footholds in about a foot of water. Seems to help get a higher catch.

Ah, sounds like I'm setting too shallow. Thanks.

Shallow isnt necessarily a problem itself. It is a problem when your set is in a fairly flat approach to the set. If it is flat, I like to dig a deep bed for the trap.

I churn a trap bed with my rake so trap is level with the "landing", should I be making a hole to step in?

I like to make a depression about twice as wide as my set trap, then set the trap in the depression, cheating to one side or the other. My depression is deep enough that the trap jaws/pan will be slightly lower than the ground outside the depression.

I notice turning the levers inline with their approach I got deeper catchs! they step between the jaws. I usually stomp a hole were the trap sits as well. In shallow water I add breasting sticks too. I make them drop there landing gear were I want not them..

I want it to be below the surrounding ground. They will put more weight on that foot. Of course if you're trapping in an area that gets a lot of sitting in then you may not want to do this.

All I can add is a extra swivel between the drowning lock and trap has saved many toe catch beavers for me . But remember if caught by the hind foot the water should be at least 4 foot deep to insure a drowned beaver. At times I set two traps at the set. left and right of the drown wire

What's your pan tension? It might be a little light.

Pan tension is the first thing I’d check. I like to have mine at 4 pounds for beaver, and almost never have a toe catch

With a trap that size, it's very possible that the hind foot is on the jaw and the pan at the same time. When the jaws come up, you will have catches like you show. The foot is usually splayed when it sets it down on the trap. You may want to offset the trap a bit more, and make sure the dog is facing at 3 o'clock if the trap is offset to the right or at 9 o'clock if offset to the left. Little things make a big difference.

Also, as been brought up, place trap in a depression bed.

Thanks folks.

I will look into the trap size. I thought with our small beaver I could get by with a #4.
