The little lady has suggested a trip to Hawaii in the spring. I don't have a clue about what island to go to. Any suggestions?

Different islands there have different characteristics and "tone." Hawaii (The Big Island) probably has the largest array of destinations and activities. But it has a ton of tourists as well. Oahu is cheapest to get to usually, but is slightly smaller. Kauai is less "touristy" but is an interesting island with plenty of places to visit and dine, but considerably less road system. Maui is a "yuppie paradise!" The least touristy island is probably Molokai; a lot fewer places to stay and VERY few restaurants. I love Molokai and have hunted there a few times. I find a condo and shop at the grocery store in Kaunakakai. Lots of cool hiking trails and of course, the old leper colony at Kalaupapa.

Get thee to Google and Wikipedia....!

Maui is my favorite but all have their beauty. Most importantly to have a great time fill your pockets with money then a suitcase full as well. Then double it and just to be sure multiply the whole works by Pi and you should be good.
Don't get sucked into one of the million dinner luau oaus ( spell check didn't help me there) do something else.
Most importantly eat lots of locally grown fresh fruit. It's incredible how good that fruit tastes unprocessed.

I wonder where folks who live in Hawaii go on vacation.

Fly into Honolulu so you can see Pearl Harbor, the Punch Bowl Cemetery and the Bishop Museum, climb Diamond Head for a spectacular sunrise, then hop on over to Maui where the pace is much slower and the food is fantastic.

Unless you are fond of unbearable heat and oppressive humidity, I would find a different destination. I'd suggest Admiralty, Baranof, or Chicagof if you must visit an island.

Landed in Maui last November and thought I was in Haiti !

I'd wait until after the election.

Whatever you do don't go to Guam if Hank Johnson is re-elected in GA.

I have been to Hawaii multiple times, however only to the Big Island and Oahu. I will give you the same recommendation I give everyone else.

We have stayed at the Hilton Waikaloa Village and really liked it. The Big Island has tons to do and see. We typically rent a car and go all over the Island, north part has some beautiful trails to walk and the sights are outstanding, find the right trails and you can visit some very secluded beaches and waterfalls. Volcano National Park is (atleast it was before the eruptions) a must see and you can spend a full day there easily. Snorkeling is great if you enjoy that, lots of easy access points with incredible amounts of marine life. In February March timeframe the whales will be around in good numbers and whale watching trips aren't too expensive and very worth the money. Overall the Big Island is one of my favorite places that I have ever been.

I personally am not at all a fan of Oahu, too crowded, too busy and way too many tourists. The last time we went with a group that wanted to go see Pearl Harbor, was pretty easy to catch an early morning flight and jump over there and spend the day seeing Pearl Harbor as well as some of the other historical sights, the group actually bought a tour package that was about $375 per person that included round trip flights from Kona to Honolulu plus fully guided day trip.

Hawaii is a great trip, but it is pricey. Feel free to PM me if want any more specifics or have questions.
