First one I have ever seen around here. I am sure they are common some places with lots of fox but its a first for me! Just trying to figure out what it will be graded as if I send it to auction and if I should skin it like I normally would a red fox or is it worthwhile skinning out for taxidermy? not sure how common this actually is.

Thanks

Nice catch. I have only caught red color type red fox. How big is it compared to the regular red fox you catch in your area?

If it's really big, it may be a fur farm escapee or carry domestic fox genes.

Same size as the other fox around the area. I was thinking a fox farm escapee as well but the only fox farm closed up shop back in the 80’s so maybe it’s something popping out in the genes from way back then? Not sure if that’s even possible over that much time but it’s a theory!

I would skin it for taxidermy if it were me.I wouldn't let it go on todays fur market.Back in the early '80's I caught 2 and the offers were about the same as for reds.

Anyone have any idea what it might be worth on the taxi market? If it’s not much I will likely get it mounted. Beautiful animal!

It's very likely that the genes were introduced back in the eighties. I have done a lot of color genetics work with house mice, button quail, coturnix quail, pigeons and beagles. It can take a long time for recessive colors to pop up if breeding is done randomly, especially if multiple genes are needed to make the color and if there are lethal factors with the genes. I don't know much about fox color genes. I would guess they are similar to beagles.

The taxidermy market is glutted with ranch silvers much nicer than that fox.

You should tan it for yourself, would be a tough sell for a taxidermist unless you have a local taxidermist wanting one.

Just my opinion.

Tan it for yourself, then when you get tired of looking at it on the wall, you can have a nice hat made from it.
