Just looking to see the various opinions on some of the most successful sets you all use, and how you go about baiting/scenting them. Here in Maine I trap in a lot of woods with pine needles that cover the ground, sometimes dead leaves. I also set in some fields. I have never been a fan of using dirt to cover sets that are in open field because I think it looks too obviously unnatural so I often use the grass to cover the trap. In the woods I also use whatever is available but and more inclined to use more dirt. I used to use primarily flat sets but have been experimenting with step-down sets this year. I've never had success on scent post sets.

When baiting/scenting I've found I typically see catches increase by checking the traps that I can fro ma distance and not touching them for a week if possible, rain or shine during that week. It could just be a coincidence too but I think by letting them sit undisturbed it creates less refusals.

Looking forward to the different opinions, I think.

I usually set a dirt hole, and a flat set, trash set or post set in a location I think looks good.
Cut off, saved meat scraps my fresh bait, one of four ogorman baits, lure in dirt hole, gland lure on back of hole.
Flat set a turd goes on spring lever furthest from lure.
Always set the slightly higher spot at the location, rain will drain better

Trash set is a oblong pile of crop trash, stalks of beans, hay clump, ect, set trap near one end of clump, lure on or just under clump

Got to using a step down dirt hole last year and really liked it. Only one place to step if they try to work the set and no backing necessary, you can make it anywhere. Works good for remakes when the backing you had on original set has been destroyed. Only down side is it fills with snow and rain so it's a fair weather set. I liked Weisers Old Reliable on back of trench and a good natural food based bait in the hole.
