I run MB 650s with about ten inches of chain and a 56 pound shock spring in the middle. I also have a total of four swivels. I trap in Central Texas solid/rock. I have butterfly double swivels for cross staking. I also have single stake attachments. I was hoping to get away with a single stake since I run a shock spring. My stakes are 18 inches of 1/2 rebar homemade. What are your thoughts for holding coyotes?

Had a coon pull 18" of 3/8... wouldn't trust a coyote on half.

What part of central Texas? If you have a fair amount of brush I'd set everything up on good drags with at least 10 feet of change and 3 or 4 swivels and start knocking them out.

Got it. Double stake or drag. I don’t need to lose any sleep over it. That is for sure.

I double stake as well, we got lots of solid rock also, some of the highest quality limestone around. If I can't get stakes in witch is anywhere I use drags. I don't like singles on yotes.

Add 20” of chain to your existing ten and you would be fine if your ground is tight enough. Rocky ground with clay is not an issue, rocky ground with sand and you had better double stake.

I recently got Wayne Derrick's coyote DVD ( cool DVD buy the way if anyone was wondering about it)and he's single staking seems like at least 80% of his staked stuff. That being said he's running about 3'-5'it looks like on each one of his traps.

Boy I sure wouldn't be comfortable with that. I like long chains for just this reason, changes the angle they are pulling on the stake. I prefer either long chains or disposables.

The portable pocket system uses 1 30" of 1/2 inch smooth (NOT REBAR) and 5 feet of chain. Works good on bobcat and coyotes for me. Clint locklear has a lot of info on YouTube or DVD about it.

I use cross stake also.with 3' of chain added to what is on the trap.Only had a coyote pull up the stake when it was in very sandy soil like sugar.Someone on here told me what to do to deal with that.Luck for me that I was there when the coyote done it and did got it.

The debate on this topic is endless. I have converted to all double stakes crossed for this year. Several of my first years trapping coyotes I utilized a single 24" stake. However, I went with an extremely long chain (4ft) and a precast good swivel. If the soil is tight, and you utilize that long of a chain, they cannot get any leverage over the top to pump the stake. I caught and held several coyotes with this method and never had a pull up. Now, the disadvantage is that it is sort of pain concealing that much chain unless there is a log right by your set to pin the chain under. It is not ideal but it is doable.

I use a lot of 24” single stakes with 10-18” trap chains.

But my ground is mostly VERY dense, heavy heavy clay. Even when saturated wet.

I also utilize a lap link for my stake swivel instead of a single stake swivel. Lap links don’t easily bind on the stake, making it even harder to jack a stake.

Now, if there is ever any doubt, I go to a longer stake (up to 32”), or use a wolf fang.

If I can stand over the stake and move that stake moderately easily, I change my anchor. With practice, it’s pretty easy to tell how well it’s holding as your smacking it in. Important to note too, the easiest time to pull a rebar stake is immediately after you’ve driven it in and it hasn’t settled or frosted in.

Not sure where you are at but I trap just south of I-10 from Gonzales to Hallettsvile and use 24" 1/2" rebar stakes and cross stake everything unless I use a drag. I am running 18" of chain on my staked traps and 8-10 foot of chain on my drags. Just now getting into the portable pockets and if this winter gets any nastier I may just have to run them exclusively and to give them a fair chance.

Tried the 18" stakes but just could not make myself feel comfortable with them. They probably work great and I would never have a problem with them but my mind just wont let me do it.

I use cable stakes and have gotten away from using a steel stake, altogether.
At times, I'll use a drag or a cable tie off.

My rule of thumb is if I can pull the stake by hand i know coyotes can. I use double stakes, chained super stakes, and drags
