This lady has a pretty interesting channel. Here she shows you how to keep eggs for a year or more without refrigeration called "water glassing" I had never heard of it. Pretty neat and good to know for the coming zombie apocalypse.

have to use a lot of salt in your spice mix to store coiled link sausage packed in lard but it sure is good. would put hot lard in a crock. lay in a coil of sausage then more hot lard and repeat. finish with lard completely covering the last coil

If you don't want to watch the long video, the recipe for water glassing the eggs is 1 ounce, by weight of hydrated lime, to 1 quart of water. Store the eggs no longer than 8 months for best quality. Eggs may be stored up to 2 years and still be edible. Only store unwashed, clean eggs.

Sailing in the '70 over seas the guys would just vasiline them and put them back in the crate they came in. But we were only gone for a few weeks at a time. Didn't affect me much as I did HAVE to have eggs every day. Back then there were no 5 gallon plastic pails no bottled water and a lot of no have things that would have been real nice tohave.......jk

water glass and hydrated lime are two different things. water glass used to be engine cooling water leaks stop leak. cracked head or block? no problem. add water glass to the coolant and run the engine for awhile. then sell the vehicle.

The key to preserving raw eggs without refrigeration is to seal the eggs from contact with air. Dozens of ways to do that. Bury in wood ashes, coat with oils like canola or mineral, as well as those mentioned and many more. Starting with fresh laid unwashed eggs is best, but not required.
Danny Clifton is correct: Lime Water is different from Water Glass. Any liquid the eggs are stored in will eventually impart a flavor. Old eggs will not froth up as well as fresh. (Think of the meringue on a Lemon Meringue pie.)
I have stored raw eggs without refrigeration for eight months without any issues. So far I have used Canola oil, food grade Mineral oil, vaseline and lard.
Hint: It's a good idea to crack the eggs into a separate container before adding to anything!

The old-timers that were here when my family moved here all stored eggs in barrels using water glass. In the spring they would find an island that sea gulls were nesting on and they would mark off an area roughly 100 ft square on the island. They would then throw away all of the eggs that were present inside that area. The next morning they would pick up all the fresh eggs that had been laid inside the square then take them home and store them in water glass. This way they would know they were collecting fresh eggs. They would continue gathering eggs each morning until they had a years supply. Sea gull eggs are close to the same size as a hen egg, and sometimes several hundred of them will nest on the same little island. If you keep taking the eggs they will keep laying replacements.

One quart sodium silicate to ten quarts cooled boiled water, we bought the water-glass at the drug store. Although engine block sealer uses water-glass, I'm not sure it's food grade. cover with at least two inches of solution and rinse the eggs before use so that slime doesn't git in your cake. When I was young everybody had "stone jar" crocks, but I think a blue bucket will work.
