Don't you think posting this is a little misleading from an educational standpoint? Top Lots have rarely brought anything like this and are nowhere near this in 2018.

I was just thanking pcr for his compliment that my fur sells high.
Nothing misleading,it says right on it, top lot.
It actually did improve my mink average that year.
I like getting the high top lots in all the species. It adds to the bottom line.

I bet it did help your average since Northern and North Central mink averaged a whopping $17.27 and $15.22 at that sale. Hitting the lottery is not in the trapper's control.

Its not that rare.I would say a lot of trappers lose out on top lot fur because of poor handling. It only takes a very small handling error to miss a top lot.So it is very much in the trappers control.

Crazy high Top Lot mink with all the perks in small Lots has happened 3 times in 22 years. Normal Top Lot will be $60 or less. In the old days when a Top Lot was a real lot maybe fur handling helped, but the Top Lots of the last decade are just a few lucky pelts pealed off the best Lot and sold with a bunch of perks.

A guy from our council had 2 marten in the top lot a couple years ago,1200 each pelt,Helped out his avg I'm sure. Not all that rare in the big picture.Always someone local getting them for one species or another.Beaver is a tough one to get,1 out of 100,000,according to the auction.A guy from haliburton got 2 in the same top lot.I forget the price that year, over a grand each though.I think it was only 8 pelts in that lot.

The auctions should give out some kind of razzy for the bottom lot too.

You have convinced me top lot $165 mink are more common in great fur areas. How many have you had Boco? Probably dozens over the years?

If you're looking at price per pelt in Ohio, coyote will be #1 for fully furred coyotes, #2 would be beaver(top end was $30 for mine at NAFA July sale), #3 would be a toss up between red fox and raccoon. Mink hasnt been a very profitable item in Ohio for a while now but you can make that up with the incidental coon and rats depending on your method.

The most overlooked fur is skunk. Yes skunk! I have seen many skunks sell in the $13-$15.00 range at the local fur auctions this past spring. Plus the scent is worth selling also!

Man I’m hoping the comment earlier about foxes is off. That’s all I target and everything else is incidental. Doesn’t really matter though. I don’t get to trap much these days anyway.

I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."

The trouble with targeting beaver is that the smaller stuff is almost worthless on today's market. I had 20 beaver out of two sets last year and I think there were about three good sized ones in the whole bunch. And only the large sizes have decent castors. So, like anything, the top price isn't what matters it's the average.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
