I was squirrel hunting, sitting with my back to an oak in the edge of an old two track logging road. There was no underbrush around that area under large hardwoods. I was trying to see a squirrel in a hickory straight across the road, looking almost straight up. I saw motion to my right, something large and close coming into my side vision. When I turned my head a 6 point buck was 10 feet away and walking straight to me like a golden retriever coming for a dog treat. It was looking me right in the eye. I was amused that it was going to soon get the fright of its life, and just let it keep coming. That is, until its nose was a couple feet from my hand and I got an even better look at 6 sharp antler points too close for comfort.

It is hard to imagine that it could not smell me, or did not see me move when it walked up. He didn't blink--but I did. I said "whoa, buddy" and started swinging my rifle around toward him.
That deer lifted off like a Saturn 5 and landed on the other side of the road. Then went airborne again , then passed the deer land speed record for 20 yards and skidded to a stop. Then it started bobbing its head looking at me and started walking back toward me. It stopped about 15 yards away and began circling. When it hit the scent stream behind me he snorted twice and walked away, stomping as he went.

I hope that deer learns some better predator avoidance skills, or he won't make it through the winter.

I saw a similar video like this. But the buck just stayed there even after the hunter was pushing his boot into the deer. After several minutes the deer was encouraged to walk away. interesting behavior

There are a lot of plants than can get a deer stoned. It is possible it partook of some.

It's also possible it was a deer that someone bottle fed or at least fed on a regular basis.

Another possibility is that some sort of illness or parasite is effecting it's cognitive ability.

goldnut, I'm glad that deer didn't act as extreme as the one in the video. I was not going to let it get any closer, no matter what it took to stop it.

Me and my cousin had a similar experience Turkey hunting once, 3 bucks and one actually was smelling my cousin I mean nose inches from him he didn't spook till I moved too see better,I nearly moved and they all turned inside out this buck was about a foot frm my head we was back to back he was smelling my cousins hand, they never blew just shot up the hill about 30 yards then eased off. I don't know that's pretty cool though! The one doing the smelling was an older buck too.
Cool story

Sometimes I wonder if deer can have disabilities like humans. The deer that stand there letting you empty your clip until you get them maybe have down syndrome or something.

I had a doe I shot at with a muzzle loader about 35 yards off, she ran off , just as I put the ramrod away from reloading here she is walking back at me she gets to about 35 yards again and is looking at me I raise up and fire again she takes off again so I reload again , the trail she is coming in on all I get is a strait on shot , just as I am pulling the ramrod she comes back in as I raise up she takes off running. wondering how I possibly missed those 2 shots I found a knot in a dead tree and sighted in on it , 6 inches right at 15-20 yards. the sight had gotten bumped.

25-30 yrs ago i made and local stores sold my deer lure. Had a guy tell me once he wouldnt use it again because he had put on soles of shoes deer hunting, saw nothing so grabbed .410 and went for squirrel. Was sitting against tree and saw a buck coming at 50 ft....thought it would wind him and go. He did nothing until it got near his boot then he yelled and got up running. Deer did same. Said it tried to sniff his boot. Just a thought for u guys....did u have attractant on?

I have seen some young bucks do some pretty stupid stuff.Once I put deer urine on my boots.I walked to my
tree stand and a young buck came up to the stand and licked the bottom 2 steps.Another time I left a
flashlight lay on the ground under my tree stand.A young buck walked up and licked the light. There is nothing
dumber than a year old basket rack deer.

I was calling yotes in Wy years back, when after the second or third series of calls, a pair of does came in fighting mad. They were both just five or six feet from me, and would get up on their hind feet a nd paw the air. I was waving my hat at them and talking to them, but they kept it up for about a few minutes. Kind of a hair raising experience, had the rifle up, just another step or two would have been the difference between one of them dying!

The OP's story sounds like a buck that hasn't had many bullets whizzing around him yet.

Something I remembered last night might have made a difference. I put plant- based mosquito repellent lotion (OFF botanicals) on thick about 45 minutes before the deer showed up. Maybe it helped to confuse his nose. I never had deer be confused before with it on though. They usually snorted before i saw them and cleared out.
