Hello we recently purchased a great dane puppy and we have talked to vets,breeders,owners, multiple different people on the best dog food types and have gotten different answers each time. We are just trying to find the best food to feed our fastly growing puppy and was wanting to get opinions on what dog food you think is best and why. Also if you feed grain free or if it has some fillers. Thank you in advance for your answers!

I feed Iams large breed. I have an 18 month old dalmatian. Dals are known for having sensitive diet needs but we haven't had any problems yet. I like Iams because it's not terribly expensive, easy to find, and the pup seems to like it. Awhile back a vet told me that if he's eating it, making a solid turd, and he's growing, the food is fine, keep it simple.

Shredded dollar bills would be the cheapest route.

Fresh horse meat would be fine. Horses are relatively cheap too.

You're getting different answers because there is no "best". Most any good quality dog food is fine for pet. Higher costs pet foods mostly just improve the bottom line of the company selling it.

If you go with a "cheap" dog food make sure you also add some additional protein and fat to its diet.

We have a 10 month old Great Pyrenees and feed her a raw diet mostly.

I’ve raised chickens, so cutting up chickens she gets all the raw bones, carcass, ect. She’s had beaver, and plan to feed her trapping carcasses this year (mostly beaver) but waterfowl carcasses, deer scraps and bones/ribs/everything. She had some deer legs from last year and ate them all up (except the hooves), even as a puppy. Nothing cooked at all- just raw meats, gizzards, livers, hearts, veggies, eggs/shell, etc. I do mix in some dog food also daily with her raw. I mean from a hunting/trapping/fishing/poultry perspective that a lot of us already do- it’s nothing extra out of pocket and very healthy and natural for the dog.

Search youtube on the raw diet- lots of info out there. just my 2 cents.

I do this as well, done right it is basically free and I do not think you can find a higher quality diet. Beaver, roadkill deer, etc.

Great dane pups can have serious bone problems from growing too fast. 23% max on proteen during thier first two years. A great dane will reach thier final weight at an age of two years, or slightly longer. The trick is slow, steady growth. These big dogs will not need the same amount of proteen that a more active dog will use. Ours is a heavy euro dane that is 1-1/2 years old, and is at 150 lbs now. She is still growing slowly, and is very healthy. Good luck with your pup.

I’ve had Danes for the last 15 years or so.I have switched feeds a few times over the years due to supply problems but would recommend both Eagle Pack large breed or Purina Pro Plan Focus for large breed.I usually switch from the puppy food to adult food when they arearound 2 years old.I also find it better to free feed my Danes rather than ration their food.Good luck and enjoy.They can be the best dogs in the world but when they want to act up look out lol.

Most grocery stores w decent meat dept will have scrap daily as well. Been raisng pyrenees pups on that feed for years.

Not much cheap about a horse unless your buying killer horses at the local sale barn.

I have a mess of guard dogs for sheep that are pyrenees/akbash/anatolian and I feed them a 26% protein, 18% fat dogfood. I get it from a local feed company, and it's mostly plant based protein, but I buy it by the ton most of the time so if it was meat based protein it would be really expensive, and it's already about 25 bucks a bag. These dogs spend their entire lives in the elements with the sheep, and most of the time live past 10 years.

fresh salmon - like they do in Alaska - just cut a chunk a day off....or a few fish a day for a big dog

Taste of the Wild was prescribed when my dog had allergies. Worked. Eliminated all grain in her diet and no problemsnow for 5 years.
