Who here has hunted them? Tips? Tricks? Habitat to focus on? I know how to find ruffed and pheasants, but now that I'm living up by crookston, there is not much to hunt for upland birds. Went up by euclid today for opener and walked 4 miles without a sign. Have also taken the pup to some wmas that supposedly hold prairie chicken, several times for walks, and have yet to flush a bird. She's young, and we may have found birds with a better dog, but the birds sure seem few and far in between around here.

Very pocketed in most areas. Up here they like thick knee hi grass.

Gotta be a Jimmy Buffet song in there no?

Old burns and old clearcuts in black spruce/tamarack bush that are growing up with red dogwood and willow hold some big flocks of sharptails here. They like the open country. In March its not uncommon to see flocks of 50 or more birds. In the fall a dozen or less is avg.
They spook very easy after you shoot the first one. Most of the time though they fly right to the tops of a spruce, sometimes pretty far off, where you can walk them down and pick them off.I like a 22rf for sharptails. They are a big tough bird and a lot harder to kill than ruffed or spruce grouse.

We have a fairly good population here,if we hunt for them here mainly crp areas. There in the beans and wheat/barley stuble to,but hard to get close to them without cover,3 to 8 foot brush patches are good ajoining to ag land, good luck.

There should be a few sharpies up on the beach ridge west of Euclid. There is a bit of habitat there so a lot of walking will be in order or else get there at first light and see if you can locate them by listening or possibly see them fly out from their roost.

That's where I was hunting. No luck this time around, but I'll have to give it a go again. Next time I'll try to beat the sun and watch em. Once the pup starts ranging a little, that will help. I walked lots of long grass prairie, and a willow line with several choke cherry bushes. Someone may have beat me to it too, being opening morning.

I don't hunt them per se, but I shoot a few every year, usually with my 22.
