My wife has been very leinent and understanding about my obsession with good traps and good guns but she started making noise about "where's my bling?",especially after a gun purchase.I have to admit I got a little carried away,if I came across a good buy on a rifle I'd endup with it sooner or later.Well, the 2014 NTA convention came to town and the wife asked rather pointedly what I'd plan on buying.I said probably nothing.I took my then 5 yr.old granddaughter with me and low and behold, one of the first tables I came across had a .303 British jungle carbine.UH-OH.figuring she wouldn't rat me out I bought it.We got home and later the wife came in."What'd you buy"?"Well, nothing much really"I says."Oh",she says.Looking at our granddaughter she say"What'd papa buy?"The granddaughter, all 5 yrs.old, holds her hands out at her hips and starts a sweeping motion like shes spraying with a machine gun.The wife watches her for a minute, then says,"a gun?Did he buy a gun?"Show me which one"and takes her over to the gun cabinet.8 guns in that cabinet and she picked out the correct one."Where's my bling"?I thought I'd got a good deal on that rifle but I've paid many, many times over.I also gave up thinking I was so sly.Believe me,they have their ways of finding out.

So funny to read about sneaking your new gear into the house. My old lady helps me carry my new stuff into the house. I suppose its easier for me because hunting and trapping feeds us and pays our bills. IF it was just an expensive hobby then I guess I understand where some of you are coming from. Guys! You need to wear the pants in your relationships......just don't wear levis, I hear they are evil now.

Should have held off a bit Buck. The Canadian Rangers are replacing there 303 British. Probably going to be tons of them floating around pretty soon.

I guess being the provider of the house I don't ask for permission. She gets things she wants when she wants them, and I get what I want when I want it. Worked out so far. She's learned that when a package arrives to the house it's trapping related. Guess I got lucky. Trying to hide things from her sounds like failure waiting to happen.

my wife used to give me a hard time , then she dropped me off at the army navy to get some new pants I come out 40 minutes later expecting her to be there about 20 minutes later she comes back and says don't be mad. mad about what , she bought a new sewing machine , ok how much , she starts in how it was a used floor model but only got taken to one show before the next model came out so it was 50% off , ok so how much $2200.00 and that was 50% off it had just had a tune up to make sure it was perfect after going to the show and came with another free tune up.

I could have yelled or said something but I didn't I played it cool and she has been very good ever since we also started budgeting hobby money that comes out of each pay check goes strait into our respective savings accounts to use for non household purchases.

lately she has been buying yarn and knitting.for colored string yarn sure is expensive but it comes out of her hobby money.

I thought they were replacing them because they were running out of rifles and parts to repair them.

used to be 55 gallon drums of 303s in the isle at Kmart for 15 dollars , there are a lot of them floating around in the US but you only see one for sale here and there in shops.

a quick search on gun broker turns up 141 for sale

there are a lot of No. 4 Mk 1 rifles around stills selling for about 250 dollars as well as others

Sometimes after a hard hunting trip I fall asleep before getting to package up the meat into meal sizes. 9 times out of ten I wake up to the freezer full of vacuum sealed meals. "Going again tomorrow?" she asks. "Well yes my dear I believe I will" says I. "Ill go make some sandwiches for you then."

Any hunter or trapper should start out their relationship by saying "I really like you but I'll never be one of those guys who stops hunting and trapping after getting hitched" I did.

Another typical conversation. "My $2000 snare and trap order should be in today". "Ok. If its at the post office Ill pick it up" Later on...."Your order is here, smelled kind of skunky so I double bagged it."

Good woman Ive got.

"Gee I could sure use one of them nice $200 packboards but I don't want to spend right now" I say
"Once the animal is dead would you rather have a nice packboard to make things easy or will the money be more useful in your pocket?" she says
"Hmmmmmm........youre right. Better get the packboard"

Ive told this before but I met my wife through mutual friends. Told her to come over with them for some fried catfish. I had coons on stretchers leaning up against the walls all the way round the dining room. told me later she almost turned around and left when she saw that. Said she really liked the meal and I made her laugh. I don't hide anything from her (I do dry fur in a shed now) and would not be very happy if she hid anything from me. Why would you marry someone you can't be yourself around?

Youre right Danny. Last sentence is perfect. The only thing she wont let me do is wash wolves in our washing machine. Understandable so I don't complain about it. If caribou are migrating through my hunting area I wouldn't want to feel like I should ask if I could go or if she wants to include me in some sort of project when really the most important thing is to get meat put away. I know some guys who would scrapbook or reorganize the closets because their old lady wants to spend time together (Then say afterwards "I WISH WE HAD SOME CARIBOU MEAT"). I say we can spend time together cutting meat once I get home. I don't do this in a way where its like my way or the highway, were just practical and never get needy. With our hard working life style we do give the other some space when catching up on sleep is needed.
