I had a elk trip planned for the thorofare of wyoming near Yellowstone but our residenr guide had to cancel so our trip fizzled out. Drew a tag and everyrthing and cant afford high prices of an outfitter . So was thinking about doing a fall.bear hunt in montana was just curious if any of you have done it and what your tips might be .

Having guided on the Idaho Montana border, Idaho side, my personal opinion would be that a spring hunt is better.

I have friends that hunt them in the fall and spring. Stillwater and Boulder drainages can produce do some research for these areas. Fergus County in the central part of the state and Meagher County South-central part of the state.

DIY hunts would be the way to go and very doable. I wish I could help you out more I just don't do those hunts.

Where's your tag good for which hunting district ? And where were you planning to hunt to begin with ? I've not hunted down towards Yellowstone in years or the Stillwater area.
BTW, I still miss Carl Frauen he was a darn good fella !

He wanted me to come down for a visit and teach him how to snare coyotes mainly and the fox and raccoons secondly. Some of our phone conversations were really something.
I felt awful I couldn't make his funeral.
There's a lot of bears just depends on where you want to go and how big of one you want ?
We had over 140" of snow last winter in Fergus Co so the berry crop is fantastic so they've had plenty to eat and been able to pack on the weight, this coming winter maybe worse from what some are saying ?
What part of Mt are you thinking about hunting in, there's a lot of private land around here but there's some good public land as well a good GPS or OnX maps is your friend.
Good optics is important to save you from a lot of walking.

If your bear season coincides with the huckleberries/blueberries ripening up, then you don't want to miss that. That might be happening right now depending on the area. I don't know about Montana but in Washington the berries will be going good well until the end of this month depending on the elevation (higher=later), until they get a freeze.

Good point Waggler, for huckleberries you're going to want to look around western Mt around here we have wild plums, buffalo berries and chokecherry with a few June berries.
Coyotes will give the bear's a real run for their money on the plums.
