Squares 4 to 5 bucks a bale for alfalfa and this year about 75 to 60 bucks a ton for round. That is this years price.
I used to raise alfalfa and sell hay and I would average 85 bucks a ton from year to year. I had no problem selling hay.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Heck I give my hay away 8-10 big round bales most years just to get rid of it, I don't need the fire hazard and cover that close to the house for critters to get my chickens! No use for it and no equipment to work it anyways better it be gone I give to a landowner I trap on so it works out for both of us.

Local hay is $5 per 40 pound bale for 1st cut, 6.50 for second cut. Can get Canadian hay (trucked in) for $10 per 50 pound bale. Profit margin at $5 and less per bale have to be tight given needed field care for productive acreage.
I’m in the second most forested state which has significant rock, low soil productivity, and acidic soils.
