So my wife's car blew a brake line yesterday morning. She works 15 miles south of home and the farm is 15 miles north and she won't have a car until Tuesday. I take her to work and the stop at Enterprise to get her a rental. After a 20 min wait in my farm clothes the man asks if I have a reservation. No I reply. Without even looking at his computer he says sorry we won't have anything until Monday.

So I leave and have a thought. I will call and see what they say. I get Enterprise central on the line and ask if the location I just left has any cars available. She replies yes we have 2 there available. I ask are you certain. Yes she replies and asks the duration of rental and I say until Tuesday. She asks if I can be at that location by noon, it is 11:20. Sure I reply and let her tell me the total.

At this point I am pretty upset and explain to her how I was told they were no vehicles available and I believe I may have been discriminated against for my dirty farm attire. She quickly connects me to escalations where I explain again. She is very apologetic and says she will have that manager call me immediately.

No call came. Now I never even considered suing anyone or company in my life, but I am pondering the proper thing to do.

I wouldn't want to rent a car to someone that was
In dirty farm attire either. I would suggest maybe changing
Showering going back and getting over it?

Should have told them you were gay. They don't care about some grubby farmer.

Would it make you lie and discriminate against a customer?

Manager may have been the one that turned you down. Although it would make me mad I wouldn't waste the time on taking it further/contacting people.

That is upsetting to say the least.

I well know who you are, coalbank-you are more hard working than many and have such unique art talents in your amazing turkey box calls, intricate woodworking, and other novel irons in the fire, in so many ventures in your life, including success in trapping good fur. My largest coyote I have in my collection was yours, with gorgeous colour . Rarely have I seen any that large , except your good friend Zagman's catches , among some other good coyote specialists .

Much less all the shows you manage to do, including NTA.

If this was a case of prejudice , Enterprise wins the prize of the year in dire mistaken judgement.

After you think a while -and give a wee bit more time for a return call- that probably wont come- prepare a response for them- in person ideally- find their manager to see in person. Presenting yourself in non working clothes , and tell them why they wont be getting your business or referrals .

There are rental companies who have jumped on the bandwagon in agreement of gun restrictions, etc....and not a few customers have stopped using those rental companies for that reason alone. Not sure if Enterprise is among them ....no matter, a moot side point . But if so, they're loosing one more good client.

I have enjoyed your box calls in not only contributing to their art decor , but calling in my first turkeys, including one nice one not 20 minutes after I unwrapped it from the mail. smile

This type of thing is upsetting for me.

Anyone who understands what it is like being in the midst of work , surely sees the difference in a hard working person's attire over anything else.

And anyone possessing an ounce of discernment in any education at all , only need to listen to you speak, and it should all immediately connect in what kind of person you are.

Have some fun with this one, coalbank , you are very good at thinking in innovative ways to solve problems ! If you wish, keep us all posted in your results .

One good response has been known to turn a whole company around in how they do things.

I would call back and tell them the manager never called. Maybe they will comp you a car for being such little snots or at least give you a big time discount. Either way, I would never use them again. But my real question here is why don't you just fix the brake line?

I'm not sure that I would believe the national call center. The guys on the ground have better information than someone on the phone a thousand miles away. BUT.......I would have gone back in person rather than waiting for a call. Confront them head on and maybe have the national call center on the phone with you simultaneously.

Better yet.......go home and change into clean clothes. Return and rent a car...go into their restroom and change back into your farm clothes and then proceed to your car !

Enterprise is in fact on of those who are now anti-NRA, and anti-gun

We returned a vehicle to the airport rental in Salt Lake after a hunting trip. I don’t remember the rental agency. All was fine until the gun box came out. He asked if we were hunting. I replied yes, but hadn’t put any animals in it or had it off road. He got out a flashlight, crawled underneath the back of the vehicle, and said it wools need to be cleaned extensively and charged us $135 more. ( we had taken same vehicle through a car wash that morning). I wanted to fight the fee with corporate, but the rental was in my buddy’s name and didn’t want to bother with it.

One day in my store I had a guy pull up in front in an old red Ranchero dressed in mechanic's coveralls. He walked in and I greeted him like I would anyone else. He had a voice that was obviously affected by cancer, but he spoke freely and told me he was looking for a shotgun but he had lost so much weight he needed to deal with recoil. I told him I'd be happy to help whenever he wanted.

An hour later he came back with his wife and her side by side 20 ga. to talk about guns. They met my wife and everybody got along fine. They became dear friends and very good customers. He was a nationally known speed boat designer and high performance engine guy who owned a huge shop in our town. Tough as nails and sent home to die of cancer twice and once from flipping his drag boat at 220 mph and breaking his neck. He was probably worth ten million bucks.

He told me later that he liked to show up the first time in his dirty coveralls and the Ranchero to see how he'd be treated before he did any business.

I'd say Enterprise lost out. Screw 'em.

Pete

id rather do business with a man that had a little dirt on him and smelled of fresh sweat ( not the havnt bathed in two days sweat) than a man in a suit. the guy dirty and sweaty from hard work probably keeps his word

True story here....A guy in a near by town won power ball ..51 million....but before the word got out, he went to the local Chev dealership in this farmer clothes and chicken poop on his boots. It was raining at the time ,and no salesman would take him outside to show him the new trucks. He quietly left and went 1 mile down the road to the Dodge Dealership....they showed him all around the trucks he was interested in....and bought 3 trucks and paid in CASH....you bet that news got back to the Chev Dealership...and heads rolled ...lol

It would seem that most truck dealerships would lose a lot of sales if they make a habit snubbing farmers....that would be like a lure maker snubbing trappers.

You wouldn't have any grounds for a lawsuit; being a dirty farmer is not a "protected class". You can discriminate against anyone (ugly, personality, poorly dressed, etc.) you just can't discriminate against anyone in a legally protected class.

Another Story: My uncle met his boss at the Milwaukee Airport to take him squirrel hunting, something he had never done. He showed up in crappy jeans and tennis shoes. The airport luggage guys ignored him until one old guy finally asked if he needed any help. That guy got a $ 50 tip which was a lot of money in the 70's. The boss went hunting with us after borrowing a shotgun from my dad and a pair of my boots. That night he took our family out to eat at the swankiest restaurant in Milwaukee before he boarded his private jet. My uncle was employed to race the man's sailboat all over the world. The man was Patrick Haggerty, co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Texas Instruments. Never judge a book by it's cover.

I changed the brake line yesterday. Still no call from a manager.

Come to think of it I had a NAFA Top Lot hat on.
