Last year was my 2nd year trapping and I was able to catch 20 coyotes off 260 acres of land. My first year I caught 11 of the same property. I know that coyotes are able to produce different size litters based on populations but my question is, what are the chances of catching 15-20 off the same land again this year assuming that nothing major changes to the land like logging or something of that nature?

Of the 20, 15 were caught near a creek that cuts through the property and I believe that it is the major travel way for all of the animals in the area.

A great catch off that property. Must be a travel way, comfort zone for sure. Good for you.
Certainly a guess for anyone what you will catch this year.
Fun thinking and talking about it. Half the fun of trapping is the anticipation.
My best to you.

You should figure the same for this year if all the conditions are the same. Good spots are always good spots.

Just passin through

If they have enough food the number will be about the same this year.

Good job, you must be set on a key location. Backfill should fill the voids youv'e created. A lot depends on how many where killed in the surounding areas. Normally here it takes 3 years before the catch falls in one permission of that size. But in super rich habitat with little presure, you shold get the same results.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

I bet you'll do well WT.

Hot spots for canines are popular for a reason. Any vacancy in a highly sought-after area will quickly be exploited.

Since you’re trapping the same acreage back to back, I would seriously consider switching up lures every now and then to help prevent habituation.

Congrats on a great catch, and best of luck this year!

Thanks,

I used cable restraints to catch them all. I hope I can get 15 more this winter.

How long last winter did you trap the property? 20 is impressive to me.

If you can trap/snare in the summer there you can cut open all the females you catch and there will be a dark red bump on her repro tract for every pup she had. We can target coyotes all year long out here and this gives you a good idea of what is running around in that area. Pups are can be relatively easy to call in after mom has been gone for a few days, If they are not too old.

I bet you'll catch as many or more this year. I'd also be willing to bet they had that farm repopulated a month after season closed. So set your goal even higher this year! And good luck!

Wow that would be a lot for me off of one piece of ground around here. Way to go! Definitely set that again!

I used to trap @8 yotes a year off my Dad-in-laws place. 140 acres along a wide creek in a low valley area. Creek was bordered by hay/crop fields which were bordered by houses. That creek was a hwy for yotes amd the few cats I caught. Pretty sure it was a territorial border also.

Some years ago I had trap one place and got 11 off of it and someone that did not belong there I seen got 2. the next year it drop to about 8.If the area that you caught the ones the past season and still show some sign reset them this season and see from there. I have one place now that is not alot of land I trap . but I get 4 to 5 a year now since some one that use to hunt them dose not hunt them like they use to that i use to get only 3 a season.

I agree.
And, I'll go further; if you took away every coyote within 50 miles for a few years and then let them come back in that same place would again be a hot spot. There are terrain and water course factors that direct animals to certain pieces of land.

Might take a couple months, but the surrounding area will refill your piece.

You will find a need to add a additional 25% to as much as 50% more permission a year to keep up catch numbers, if not fully moving and setting up a new line every 3rd year.

that sounds like the farm I trap every year. Seem to catch more every year like there is no end to them. We are running trail cameras now for deer and the coyotes are just starting to show up on camera.
