First time selling fur, first time putting up fur. Thought I did okay, got my lotting back and now I’m wondering. Shipped 17 coyotes. 1 was *I. 8 that are II. 5 that are I-II. 1 that’s DG3 and one that’s V. My four coons are 4xl but all graded as SDA. The coons were all caught with snares, usually with one shoulder in the snare. Is that why slight damage? What about my coyotes? Thought most were good although I knew at least one was well past prime. What’s my overall grade?

Thanks for the replies so far. Sold 15 coyotes with 2 bought back. Sold 2 coins and 2 bought back. Haven’t seen what each individual sold for or which ones were bought back but I averaged right at $60 for the coyotes and got $15 each for the 2 coon. What’s everyone’s thoughts? I guess I’ve learned to try and make the earlier sale but reading comments on here elsewhere I feel pretty good. My brother who sold in the round probably averaged $45, with one as high as $70. His green coon he wasn’t offered anything. What does buyback mean? Will they just be held over and sold at first sale next year? Thanks for all replies.

Unless your neck snare your coon, almost all of them will go SDA or SDB if you catch them in snares.

Not too bad on the coyotes. I would think there would be more I-II and less II. But that sort of depends on when you caught them.

For future reference, you might try to get your fur put up in time to make the major sale, which is usuallin April or May or early June.

The first sale in January or February is usually a "test the market sale". Though some times prices are very good.

The third/last sale is a cleanup sale. With limited amounts of fresh goods. This year that sale is the first week of July (this week). Next season the clean up sale is towards the end of August. That should be interesting......

Wissmiss I'm not arguing with you as I believe every word you just said, but what sucks to us here is if you ship through are depot even before there last resiving date it goes up for the July sale kinda screws us good!they don't pick up the Kentucky depot till after the last resiving date for the May sale no matter when you take your fur to um! I ask the fellow who runs it and he said they won't do it, he asks every yr.

next year you will be able to ship for the May sell from Ky however you will probably not have all your fur ready and there will only be one ship date..

Red sleeves - I hear what you are saying. Wish I had the magic answer but I don't. Until wild fur prices come back, I don't see either auction company being overly concerned about wild fur, especially fur from less desirable sections. Sorry.

Nodak63 what part of ND are you from? The last 6 yotes I caught towards end of Feb were all down hill II's. One had small rubs on each side of it's tail and he graded Sdb. It was very noticable and I almost didn't send it.

Did you sew up all holes? I would guess the III grade was holes or rubbing. If you didn't notice a grade V it was destroyed in the drumming process or had green belly and fur slipped in the drum.

Nodak63 said he knew one of his coyotes was way past prime. I'm thinking that might be the one that graded a V.

You don't often see a grade V coyote at NAFA but when you do, they are rubbed and broken from stem to stern. Which is what a past prime coyote might look like.

Duckstick80, I did sew up all holes as best I could. But my coyotes were a little later, snaring season doesn’t start till late November here and I shared all the way till later part of February. Pretty even spread across those 2 1/2 months. Maybe I did alright considering that. I also had tore a couple tails, I sewed them back on but not sure if they would’ve made it thru drumming. Does that matter? I’m in far NE ND, almost to canada and my brother sold some in the round and fur buyer gave up to 70$ for one that way. I’m excited to see what the sale brings, first year I knew there would be a learning curve. This year gonna try my hand at some footholds so I can get an earlier start. From what I read on here seems like some guys are about done by the time we can even start using snares.

Torrn up tails or missing tails should not be a reason to downgrade a coyote pelt. Probably won't make top lot, just from a presentation standpoint, but can still grade # 1 if the fur quality is there.

Not sure about your part of the country but in many places coyotes start to go down hill after the first of the year and are completely done by the end of February. I talked to a coyote buyer from central Montana and he said that this past season coyotes started to go bad sooner than usual.

If you switch to traps and start earlier than the end of November, the quality should be better overall. In that part of North
Dakota, you should be able to start trapping the last week of October and get coyotes that will grade I-II, unless you are catching pups.

It will be interesting to see what your coyotes sell for. Tomorrow (Thursday) is the day. Good Luck.

Nodak63, I'm about 120 miles south of you and a little west. Sounds like you did a good job on the put up then. I'm pretty sure I read a quote on here somewhere and a guy said you can't make a 10$ coyote into a 100$ coyote in the fur shed but you can make a 100$ coyote into a 10$ one real quick! You didn't have alot of damaged grades so you are on the right track. Some damage is out of your control. I snared most of mine and I had select grade, *1, and mostly I-II but I live in open farm land. If there is a lot of trees and brush in your area they can wear down faster then open country.

Buyback = not sold.

All Buy Backs are available for Private Treaty sales over the summer. If not sold, they will be reoffered at the February sale.

I'm think there is a very good chance you bought back coyotes will be sold in the near future. If they sell in the next week or so, you will be paid in the check from this sale. If they sellduringthe last half of July until the middle of October, you will be paid the first part of November.
