I put up a low power electric fence and it seemed to do a good job keeping deer n coon out of my garden.
Then yesterday I saw a deer in the garden, chased it off, didn't realize the fencer was no longer working, light is on but I feel nothing while holding the wire, looks like I need a better fencer

I'd check it out well before I bought a new one.

My brothers electric fence was struck by lightning last summer. The fence wire was broken into hundreds of pieces about 2" long each. The pieces were lying around everywhere for about 100 ft along the fence line. I think he fixed the fencer itself somehow though.

Wow that's crazy, never heard of that before, that would be nuts to see wire blasted to pieces. I'll look it over, putting up a new grapevine support on back of garden, that might help block those pia deer

make sure the fence isn't grounded by grass or weeds

There was a good amount of grass in the lower wire, but it didn't seem to effect it all that much before, I also grabbed hold of hot wire coming out of the garage, nothing there

Cotton tipped you off,the ground at the charger is the most important part of the whole system.Make sure it is as deep in the ground as possible and pour a gallon of water on it occasionally to keep the ground around it moist. Dry dirt is not a very good conductor.

Could also be the fuse some have one that is accessible on the outside others you have to pop the cover to access

And some do not have one at all but I would check it’s a cheap fix

I don't know if this one will come apart, it is cheapest one at farm store
I did drive ground rod in, it was working a couple weeks ago, I'll look at it soon
We had a lot of rain, all ground is wet
It's red light was on before I unplugged it

As mentioned above, check your ground. I keep 2 pastures of hogs with one fencer and every time I think it’s beat, it winds up something else. I use two ground rods about 15 feet apart with separate wires running to them. Also check your power source. If everything checks out then maybe grab a new one. I do have a couple that did eventually burn out but it usually takes quite awhile

Mostly likely what it is what Tactical.20 said. A good ground is the most important thing for a fencer to run properly and for that matter anything that is electrical.

I agree to check the ground and the fuse and keep grass and weeds off of the wire. I spray my fence lines with roundup to keep the wires working. After you get it working, a 5 light tester tells you how well it is working and prevents those nasty burn marks. Nothing worse than burn marks on Mr. Johnson when he is meeting a lady friend.

When I ran cattle between me and my brothers we had a bunch of fencers, both electric, battery and solar. They go bad every once in a while. The old kind buzzed and had a weed chopper plug in module. Then they went to the solid state snapping ones. Better but still did not like weeds or to be on the ground. Right before I quit ranching they came out with low impedence (what ever that means) fencers. Worked great. The fencer you bought .... was it a $25 to $40 pet fencer? I think to buy a good fencer around here your looking at $60 to $100 easily. Even much more for a 10 mile or more fencer.

If your lead wire out of the fencer is not hot it is not your fence it is before that as others have mentioned, fuse, ground or the fencer itself. If your light is on but no current created then there is something keeping the fencer from generating any current or not allowing the current to leave the machine.
