My son and I were unsuccessful in drawing our first option for antelope in WY this year and we had been hoping to take a father-son DIY antelope hunting trip in September as this will be his last year at home before moving off to college next fall. My question is: has anyone here hunted in this unit and how was the overall hunt? We are planning to drive there and tent camp and actually prefer not to hunt out of the truck. I don’t mind packing animals out and actually intend on showing him how to pack out regardless of where one would fall should we be successful. There seems to be a reasonable amount of public land available but it is hard on a map to know what access is like as many of the roads just seem to end. I would be open to driving the 13 hours each way to scout if needed over a weekend this summer. Any help on this unit is greatly appreciated.

If your putting in for leftover tags, the reason there's tags leftover in that unit is because almost all private land. 85%

But, there's a shipload of leftover tags there, so they must be having problems with them.

Call the C.O. for that area and see if he has any landowners with depredation problems, (too many speedgoats in the alfalfa).

This might help a little too.

think outside the box

Marty B gave some good advice. 85% private, 15% public but that doesn't mean 15% accessible. I would put it more like 1% accessible, but that is just a guess. So that means that all the hunters who don't have a place to go will be crawling over that acreage. 0 points required to get a tag; that means a lot more tags issued than demand for those tags Also, some spots turn into "tent cities" a day or two before opening day. If you are used to and enjoy hunting amongst a lot of other hunters, that may not even matter to you Scouting can be fun, but understand the situation is that 20 minutes after daylight every antelope on public ground will be on the move. Depredation hunts can probably be found, but most often are does only, if that matters. Call the landowners; pay a "trespass fee" to hunt. Even then, there can be an abundance of hunters Ask questions: how many on the property? can I camp? is there a place I can get potable water? How long can I hunt? etc. . For pure fun, go after opening week. .Maybe things have changed in last few years, but I wouldn't count on it.
All that being said, go and have a good time with your son. Keep your expectations realistic. Make memories, see new country together, be patient and polite. As a bonus, you'll probably kill an antelope.

Also check for Walk in Hunting Areas if any.

Should be on the g&f site somewhere.

Using the search function on the different hunting sites might turn something up too.

Last time I was there I met a young man from Wyoming. He had chased a buck antelope for 3 or 4 miles shooting at him about every mile. Pay a trespass fee if you can find one not filled. Like others have said contact a game warden or biologist if you can get them to answer a phone.

Call the BLM and the Local Game Warden. We used both for advice when we hunted In Wyoming. BLM field agent that is.

If my links above don't help Google "Trespass fee Wyoming antelope" and you'll get a forum just for that.

Since that Unit is 85% private, it very well may be the way to go!
