European officials last week imposed stiff tariffs on a wide range of U.S.-made goods sold within the European Union. The move came in response to President Trump's recent decision to slap tariffs on European imports. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Monday, Harley-Davidson said the tariffs imposed by the EU "would have an immediate and lasting detrimental impact to its business in the region." The company reported $5.65 billion in revenues last year and Europe is its largest overseas market, with almost 40,000 customers buying motorcycles there in 2017. That increase will add $2,200 on average to the cost of each motorcycle sold in the EU and would cost the company $90 million to $100 million a year, the filing said. "Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company's preference, but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe," the filing said. A History Of Harleys The company did not say where production would be shifted, or how many jobs might be affected, but said the move would take nine to 18 months to complete. It also did not say which U.S. factories would be affected. The company's U.S. factories are in York, Pa.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Menomonee Falls, Wis. It also has manufacturing operations in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand.

America first will be messy but it is necessary. America has been a doormat for too long. Stop it now or it will never stop.

I may be mistaken, but I think the Kansas City plant was scheduled to close about this time next year before the tariff battle ever started.

I think they are looking at the 500 & 750cc cycles. I have yet to see that many in the U.S.

Bought any parts for a Harley lately? Tires, tubes and most electronics isn't made in the US. They didn't drop prices any either. The Kansas City plant was already being shut down and moved to the PA plant. That was in the news right before the election I believe. It has three assembly plants outside the United States - one each in Brazil, India and Thailand.

Brother in law is an engineer for Harley in Milwaukee - he said they began discussing this the day Europe began signalling new tariffs.

Yup.... There's been buzz for the last month. Not just at Harley but at all the large shops around town. Might have to move back to Racine and work at Bombardier or Foxconn

The cycles being built over seas will be sold over seas, got no problem with that. exactly, it avoids the stinking tariff wars getting worse daily, which will help us stockholders

I used to get a big kick out of the 'Jap crap' 'buy American ' attitude from some Harley owners back in the day. I'd ask "how's that Showa front end ride?" .

I have owned a Harley since the early 70s. H-D used Showa suspension parts in the later 70s.

OK let me get this straight. People are saying "OH NO ! Trump's tariffs are going to make companies leave. It will make goods cost more!" Well if foreign countries are paying too much to import and our companies are moving to avoid the tariffs then MAYBE some of the foreign countries will move their plants here....
Also if China puts tariffs on our goods it will dilute the profit? But if we put tariffs on China's goods it will cost the people more. Ok which is it? Why can't our goods just cost the Chinese people more and not dilute the profits from goods made here. Classic case of media not using the same rules for both countries...... Here's more jobs coming in. Harley Davidson's are over priced anyway lol. Steel plant reopening by UK firm to avoid tariff.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....
