Take a moment to pause and reflect today and remember those lost in one of the greatest military invasions in the history of the world.

How many WWII veterans are still alive?

I remember when the last WWI vet died. With the passing of lives we're seeing the pssing of memory.

Not very many, unfortunately. I know of two at this point. A neighbor lady's Dad, and a Gentleman I met last weekend, who I had the honor of shaking his hand and thanking him for his service. Both in their 90s.

We have one in our church. He's 93. Was in the pacific theatre on the Solomons with Major Boyington for a little while.

I lost my best friend two years ago. Jesse Reynolds was one of Missouri's oldest WWII veterans. He passed away at 100 years and 3 months old. I got to visit with him a few weeks before he passed. I will never forget it, He gave me a hug and said well kid I tried to teach all I knew, hope some of it rubbed off.

Think about him all the time. He would pick me up (I wasn't old enough to drive) and we would go coon hunting. I could tell him anything and he would always listen, even had an opinion or two to offer.

Thanks Jesse and to all the others who served.

Your grandfather is probably on the younger side of that generation, only 17 or 18 years old at the time. Mine would be 100 now but he's been gone for 20 years.

My grandpa is 93 and landed on Utah 2 days after D-Day. He was infantry and walked through France, Belgium and part of Germany and has a Purple Heart and 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was hit the 3rd time after crossing the Rhine River at the Remagen Bridge. Grandpa lives at home still with my uncle. He is in good health and enjoys watching the Brewers and Packers and being with family. I've talked to him about the war but he doesn't say much due to all of the horrible memories. His is my hero!!!

My dad is 92 and served in Europe in tank destroyers. He won a bronze star on his 19th birthday after becoming annoyed with some Germans who blew a track off his ride. He gets around well, probably in better shape than I am.

Yes Tweed, needed parents permission to enlist. He enlisted with is older brother, the only tales he told about the war were the good ones..

Sadly all the news talked about this morning was the Robert Kennedy assassination. Terrible thing, but he only had potential to change the world. On D-Day a LOT of lives with potential were lost but they actually DID change the world.
Thanks American vets of all kinds and times. Also, other allied vets, but USA changed the war.

I haven't been able to find the number of D-Day vets alive but in Sept 2017 there are more than 500,000 WWII vets still alive which is higher than I expected. However 360 die every day.

I found a British number from 2014 (70 anniversary) that only 500 British D-Day vets are still alive.

Nice topic. Thank you to all of the brave soldiers that went ashore on D-Day, it is almost unfathomable to think about the experiences that those men had there and we are all richer and FREE because of it. I think there are less then 500K WW2 vets still living, as they would be in their mid-to-upper 90's at this time. What brave men they were!
