Is that 6 inch in the walls?
How about 20 inches of loose fill in the attic for an R49 rate.

It's 2×6 walls with a 2×4 skirting, so the foam is about 4" think. I haven't decided on the loose fill. People say the foam is pretty good. I am putting a wood stove in too so I wonder how hot it will be in there. Is that 6 inch in the walls?

Getting ready to have my pole barn on my new property sprayed, it's going to be my fur shed in he future and I figured while I have the time and it is empty I will get it spray foamed and not have to clean it out again
My under standing is after a certain thickness (I don't recall the number) that more foam does not create any more benefit
Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

How about 20 inches of loose fill in the attic for an R49 rate. We are using a LOT of foam insulation in the custom homes we build and it presents many advantages. Cost difference is pretty big over batts, but I think that will come back pretty quickly in energy savings in most homes. The rate is about R-7 per inch of closed cell (icynene) foam, so the OP's 4" represents about R-28. R-49 would only require 7" of foam, whereas loose fiberglass batts would be 14" thick for R-49.

My under standing is after a certain thickness (I don't recall the number) that more foam does not create any more benefit I would say that depends on where you live. And how you heat. Tempering a pole barn, I could see a point of diminishing returns. Try to keep a big house at 70o is another story and more is usually better.

Did you have the insulators run the wiring too? lol.
Good looking building though. lol no I did the wiring, got the out side walls good enough for them to spray so now I will go back and straighten up the rest.

The house I bought I foamed the basement walls with the close cell foam and the ceiling and inside walls with the open cell foam. So far so good. Eventually I will do the upstairs and attic also with spray foam. I did a 24x24 garage that is my fur shed floor to peak of roof with open cell and can keep it 80 degrees in the winter with an electric heater or a pellet stove set at the lowest setting will keep it about 75.
It's your story, tell it how you want me to believe it

The reason they want the closed cell in the roof because it is water proof. The open cell under a roof will hold water like a sponge until it becomes over saturated and begins to drip. When you create a completely sealed home like the pic above you need to have a fresh air return along with a dehumidifier and a humidifier.
don't worry over the smart ones. catch the dumb ones, they pay the same.
i can do it because i dont know that i cant.

You will love your heating and cooling bills! By doing that you can undersize your over all system size by one ton. Don't let your hvac guy get carried away with your fresh air intake all the out side air it sucks in you will have to pay to condition! A lot of people don't realize a well insulated house will mold during the summer with a larger ac versus a smaller one! the reason the large one will make your house like a cave cold and damp! smaller one will run longer dehumidifying it 100%. the seer of your ac unit will dictate your operating cost over any thing else! as long as you stay in prospective. That house would be a great candidate for a ground source heat pump! but they are very pricey! With a wood stove im betting you will be opening windows in the winter. Congrats on your new house
