Who has one and what are your opinions on it? I'm looking at one in a wood stock. Thanks, Sarge

I almost bought one the other day , would have been paying 100 dollars for the rifle and 150 for the glass on it and wound not have felt cheated.
if you have to spend more than that there are better options.

seriously look at the TC compass or venture one of the guys at the club has a few and had them out the other day , very nice rifle for the low price tag and they shoot , he had one that did not shoot to the MOA guarantee and he did send it back it took months but the rifle that came back looked like the barrel was hand lapped and shot very well under MOA

Nothing wrong with the 783. All the budget rifles have worthless synthetic stocks but your looking at wood anyway. That being said I've seen the 700 ADL going for $380. So...

I went Axis. $260 but it did need some tinkering. I like that any small shank savage barrel will fit and it can be configured for long or short action. That may not interest you though.

There are lots of better options than anything with Remington stamped on it. The only thing worse than Remington quality control is their customer service.

Savage makes some good quality, low cost rifles.

Eh...wot?

I have many 700s and one Mod 7. I tune my own triggers to 2 3/4 lbs and they shoot well. Never once needed any factory support. Never owned any Remingtons that were not based on the 700 receivers. I have ADL, BDL, and CDL versions. Wood , laminate, and plastic stocks. Blue, stainless, and fluted barrels. My most accurate are the ADLs. Had a lon action CDL blueprinted and chambered for 280AI. Put it in a McMillian stock. Not worth it. Standard receiver is just as good. Any rifle without quality mounts, rings, and glass is subjuct to disappoint its owner. Same for trigger. Don't skimp on trigger or sights and expect great results.

I suggest you look else-ware on advise on the 783. the aftermarket is gearing up big time for this action, gunsmiths doing builds on them say they are truer than any out of the box 700. smooth actions, great triggers out of the box. Remington hit a home run with this one.

from the build perspective they probably are not bad , hundreds of thousands of nice rifles built on old mausers because they were strong and cheap many started off looking nothing like the finished product.

the complete 783 can be had for about the same or less than a mauser with a worn out barrel and a strait bolt handle these days

it would make sense that the 783 is cut on newer machinery to reduce cost so likely more true , with a barrel nut the barrel is less work to fit

Criterion is making barrels for them and since they use the Savage style barrel nut you can get very tight head space with a wrench and a set of gauges.

you can build on a 783 you bought complete for less than buying just a savage or Rem action.

you almost have to wonder what ancient machinery the 700 is made on that it needs to be blue printed , you would think in today's machining that in would feed a piece of stainless bar-stock and out would feed perfectly machined completely true to 0.0005 receivers.

but the after market parts are still limited for the 783 if your looking for other donor rifles look at http://cdiprecisiongunworksstore.com/
you can get a good idea of the build rifles popular enough for them to make bottom metal for.
as well as shopping for other components.
